what would YOU do with a 225g 3' wide tank?

Both of you are wrong. The gallon volume of the tank isn't as important as the WIDTH of the tank. And OP said he's going to have a 3 ft. tank. That's plenty of room for either a silver or an african aro to live. I've known many people who have kept their aros in 180 and 210 tanks and the aros are healthy. With a 3 ft wide tank they'll be even better.

I'm also kind of tired of people saying you need a tank that's at least 4 or 5 ft. in width to adequately keep an aro. That's just not true. If it were, then only about 3% of the people here would be able to have tanks that big and be able to have healthy aros.

Yeah it's a 3' wide tank that is only 5' long. You can't keep a 30"+ fish in a tank that is not even twice it's lenght.

well thats alot of room so keep inmind whatever you decide to get, it has years to grow eg. arowana, red tailed catfish, your choices are almost endless... i would make an awesome salt water tank!!!!

Yeah but the chances of a silver aro growing to 30" in an aquarium are pretty small. How many silver aros over 30" have you seen on mfk?

Iluvmyfish420 what do you keep?
I feel kind of shocked considering my footprint that people are saying I can't have an arro.
I've seen them in way smaller tanks and also never seen one that grew to its full wild size that wasn't kept in a pond.
I could understand no red tail cats cause they grow 4-5 feet long.

It's a shame when I got this tank and all the stuff for 200 bucks my initial thought was "Wow! I can keep all kinds of monsters in here"
if Bderick67 had his way It would be just a large grow out for feeders

Okay, so this is a simplistice view on things, but:

An aro can easily exceed 24", so we will call it 25.

My tank is 3x3 which means it is 3/5ths of your tank size so by the same respect I could keep something that was 15".

Which I would not do, I know I'm going to feel bad when my GTs hit 6".

The fact of the matter is: you will do as you please, nobody here is going to stop you. Only you yourself will deem whether or not the tank is appropriately sized. If you buy it as a juvenile you may think when it hits 18" that its too big. At least then you've had some experience/time keeping an Aro. Or, you may decide that its fine and keep it in there for life, your choice.

But IMO once it exceeds 18-20" then you need to move it on.

Sure, people on here keep them in smaller tanks, but why make your own standards based on others. We all know you do a good job of taking care if your fish at current. Why ruin that reputation?

How about just the two in my own aquarium. With proper care(feeding and water changes) 30" is easily surpassed. Even with that being said an aro need be kept minimum in a tank 3x it's own length. This means the OPs tank is good for a aro up to 20". How many adult silver aros have not reached that or at least 24"+, virtually none. On the rare occassion there may be one, then it is likely it is under very poor care.

Yep. I had a 2ft aro in my 125 but I lost it to a string of blazing hot summer days along with a teacup ray last summer. Have a 7" silver and a orbigny 10" ray ina 2ft wide 150 gal.
