I mean most air pumps for a sponge filter are waaaaaaaay louder than an ac motor humm.

This thing hooked up to two of my big sponges is pretty potent and surprisingly quiet.
Or were you being sarcastic? I could detect it if you were.
I used to have the old Whisper filter that is indeed very quiet. But the price to pay is that the motor is too weak and won’t self restart unless the impeller is cleaned every couple weeks. It’s a liability so I abandoned Whisper.
Has anyone tried the new Whisper IQ filter? The new IQ model is advertised to be self priming with a submerseable motor that is even quieter.

For AC500 users, has any one tried to replace the impeller with a smaller impeller from the next lower model. I have replaced all my Penguin 350 impeller with 200 or 170, and it is a lot quieter. You will satisfy some gph, which you don’t really need. I found that lower gph actually improves mechanical filtration by delaying but more thorough clogging.
