What's a good budget friendly HOB filter that will fit in a 125?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don’t know about you, but I haven’t even had to take the motor off my filters much since I first set them up...maybe once or twice in the last 5ish years....

Ditto. The only time I have ever had to remove mine was years ago when I ran sand in all of my tanks, which did result in some damaged impeller shafts and impellers on those AC units. No issue with the O-rings, ever. Have I mentioned that? lol

Best performing mechanical filter runs on gentle flow, as excessive gph will just clog up the filter faster and prematurely.

I clean the AC filters in my 125 gallon set ups once every 3-4 months. Is that what you mean by prematurely?

Look, I don't care what filter anyone buys, it's all good to me - but some of the propaganda being posted here about AC filters, and filters in general, is just plain goofy.

Not worth arguing. Let those who like to buy garbage continue to buy garbage. They will know what quality is when they actually buy it

You guys seem to be taking this AC defense thing rather personally. It's just a HOB filter.
You are 100% correct. Nothing keeps me up more at night then a bunch of uneducated fish keepers talking about HOB filters.

Gotta say this forum has been cracking me up lately. I can’t speak on RD’s behalf but do you honestly believe we care whether someone takes our advice or not? I can speak personally for myself and say I get nothing but a good laugh from these kinds of threads.

Our personal tanks will continue to be successful and healthy. Our fish will live long healthy lives while those that surround us will continue to lose them. When they ask for advice we will be sure to help them. From there it’s their decision whether they choose to use it or not. Knowledge will come with experience and in time I’m sure both will be gained.

Personally I just hate seeing incorrect info spread on the net. It doesn't matter whether it's about HOB's, water dechlorinator, nutrition, fill in the blank. It's all the same to me. Some day someone will stumble on to MFK via google or whatever, read some of this info, and take it for gospel. I'm just trying to keep things real for those that will come later. I'm glad to see others doing the same.

Im all about hearing other peoples opinions and their reasoning behind it. Some people get all riled up and take it personally but i honestly love the interaction. Thats why im here. It'd be pretty boring if everyone was monotone in their delivery, constantly agreeing on everything.

I think the penguin 350 has its place. Say if you were trying to put a 40 breeder setup together for less than $100, i would definitely consider it. But i know it would be a waste of electricity and time and effort on one of my tanks. And I'm among the keepers with smallish tanks around mfk...

I wonder what the OP ended up doing lol.

Ive known hobbyists emotionally attached to their favorite fish, but emotionally attached to their filter is just bizarre.

What keep me up at night is wake up or return home and walk into a flooded living room from a failed tank or equipment.
