What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A tall order you give us :)

You need a Guard dog, not a thieve licker or a signal giving barker. ( Labradors, and all like breeds are out )

You need a "person / family " guard dog, so all the big "outside dogs", property gardians, are out ( sheppards, mastiffs, pack breeds, Catahoulas, etc, etc, are out )

Having small children and a wife ( who is not too keen on "agressive famed" breeds as I understand your issue ) you do not want overtly Alpha breeds ( because they will only respect you, as the pack leader ). Although, with small exceptions this is perfectly correctible and this is what I would want in your position.

I would center my choices on dogs with inbred family protection sense and with "leiterfuhrigkeit" ( conductibility ) ie, dogs that like to be led and live with, people.

German Sheppard comes foremost ( not my dog breed in any case ). Rottweiler, irrespective of what your wife fears, comes a close second, as come the Giant Schnauzer, the already mentioned Airedale, as several ohers ( Boxer is too playfull for me, but would fullfill the order )

Last but not least, and the most important, considering the environment you live in, carefully choose the dog, check the breeders, speak with them. You will want to avoid a puppy mill or a mall center lfs dog at any cost.

Malinious are another option, as smart and loving as a gsd, but smaller.

I wouldn't suggest malinois unless you wanna do some kind of dog sport and devote a lot of time towards training. The average malinois is not a pet but a working dog that needs a lot of attention and mental exercise way more than the average dog owner can provide. I say get a medium shepherd mix

We are going to our local ASCAP to look at a German Shepard mix. I'd prefer a puppy but I think the dog is about 2 yrs old( which is technically still a puppy). My wife had a German Shepard/colie mix as a kid and feels comfy with that type of dog.

a 2 year old GS is NOT a PUPPY anymore.

Forgive me but it is, all due respect, the wrong way to go. It is commendable, but the results are a big if ( apartment considered and kids involved ).

2 years is not a puppy but it is a young dog fresh out of adolescent. It should make a good guard dog provided its good with kids and isn't rude

This.

( but exception to GS would not go with "real" shepherd, pure or mixed.

I wouldn't get a german shepherd if your wife is slightly scared and you have a baby. They're awesome dogs but if it's your first dog, don't do it.

Nix that. Your best bet for an apartment would be a small staffy. If your wife is scared of pits, tell her to quit being an idiot. They make the BEST family dogs. As for you, considering a large breed for an apartment is cruel. Big dogs need a large property to look after and lots of exercise.
