What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beagle as a guard dog not really good but they are a amazing alert system, very loud. Typically good with kids but not a guard dog

Not familiar with beagles in regards to children, but I know they're very loud which is probably good for a guard dog but don't quote me; i would advise like others have said an older dog which is already calm and trained, and there's plenty at shelters that would be put down otherwise.

My youngest wanted no parts of a big dog. The dog even tried to make friends :/ we will just have to sit and wait to find the dog that will work best for all of us. Shame though bc the Gs we visited was beautiful :/. I only thought about Begals bc one was being adopted and she petted that dog right away. We tried to show her that the dog was nice but no dice. Perhaps we will just begin visiting the shelter on a regular basis to help her get over her fear without traumatizing her.

Beagles are pack hunting dogs. I have found them to be great in groups. Not so much so solo. But still decent pet as to being a guard dog? About the best they would be is as an alarm and deterrent. That is usually all that is needed for your average criminal to move on to an easier mark.

I know most have posted the breeds they own as loads of dogs are good family guard dogs depends on the personality of the dog massively also
Both my shar pei have been great guard dogs and protected my family and home , great with the kids and visitors once introduced , takeaway men etc get seen off its quite amusing to watch them trying to take money out of your hand from four feet away lol
Shar pei were originally used and bred as guard dogs for the royal palace in China many years ago there are a very loyal yet independent breed of dog , there size varies a lot but big or small they'll protect you till the end
Here's my 16month pup swifty tired out after a long run about on field uploadfromtaptalk1398808000864.jpg

Just put an aquarium with a GATF at your door lol, I kid. But I have lots of nephews and nieces that was scared of our GSP Pit mix but eventually they got used to her. Might be a good idea like you said to keep visiting shelters.

A large breed puppy and a new born... Good luck. My rottie had a chewing stage that lasted for two years... The first year was terrible. That was with daily walks. And she is a fraction the energy that you'll see in a German Shepard.
I see this all day at work. People think they can handle it and 6 months later they hate the dog and are trying to rehome the poor thing.

Proper training resolves all issues every dog has it's teething stage mine I offer alternatives chew toys bones rawhide never lost one thing yet and most his teething is done I've seen people get small medium and large and hate it because they don't train the dog and when it picks up bad habits you have to turn its attention to somewhere else you just have to be prepared to invest time I think that's where people go wrong is they think you can just bring it home and it knows what to do and that's so wrong it's time and dedication that makes any dog act the way you want
