What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lotta good looking dogs folks! :headbang2 if I had the room i would get another New England black lab. she was a great dog, loved every one but strangers.

See a reputable breeder. I personally wouldn't trust a shelter dog around children there's too many unknowns. You don't want a dog that will fear/stress bite. You should also check with your insurance agent and see if any breeds will be a problem with coverage. I couldn't get renters insurance when I had pits.

+1 on shelter dogs and kids. get a 50 buck pup that comes with shots, or a AKC papered one if you can afford.

I dot agree with the shelter dog comment. The dogs that don't "make the cut" for the shelter are not up for adoption and are euthanized. I know someone that works for our local city shelter and the dogs are thoroughly inspected before being put up for adoption.

As a shelter worker of 4 years shelter dogs can make perfect companions for children its all about picking the right dog. I've personally adopted dogs out to families with kids and had the adopters come back and tell us how great it's going. Its all about picking the right one and making sure it's a match. I've denied certain dogs to families with children because I could see it wasn't a good match. Its all goes down to individual dogs

I have watched a few shows on what all goes into shelter dogs before they are allowed to go to adoption, and in all honesty i have nothing back up my feeling about it cept my gut. if I have toddlers I want to get a large type dog as a pup. just so I am sure.

Rotti love em family devoted and will protect your family. My second options would be a Doberman or German shepard

my German short hair was a great and intelligent dog also. only problem with her is she loved to have her hand held, literally. she would come up to you sit down and put her paw on your hand, she wanted it held, quite the change from the "scratch my butt, scratch my butt!" from my past large dogs.
