What's a good guard dog?

Of course you need to see the parents. And see them in the breeders family environment.

Run away from puppy mills. Bombs in the making.

If the dogs live socializes with persons, the babies have that ingrained.

And then, of course, you need a firm hand. You will always be the pack leader. If you choose a girl, you have a lot of work cleared out of the way.

Go and check them, and feel the environment.

It is a breed that has not yet been destroyed, because it is not trendy. So pick it up before it goes the path of consanguinity, bred for inappropriate reasons, etc, etc, etc...

Feel free to ask away!

I bow to your knowledge in regards to this breed sir. What are your thoughts on raising Cane Corso in the typical American urban setting and not in a rural area? I've seen people who own them in the bay area who honestly shouldn't own them and they along with presas are becoming frighteningly common sight.

I do not live in the States. I have the exprience I have. Few dogs, if well bred and socialized , are dagerous except when the need arises.

What is dangerous, imho, is bad owners, mwho have these breeds as penile extensions.

And any dog attached to humans ( as opposed to rural sheppards and guard dogs ) can live in an urban environment.

Last, again in my opinion, Presas may be more difficult to handle. With Presas two factors joined. A dog more rough in the making, and it became trendy ( larger pit look? ). Becoming trendy, its breeding usuaally falls in the wrong hands.

Wow. your guys expertise is invaluable to me, I really appreciate it, especially you Miguel, and thanks for those beautiful pictures :)
It sounds like Ill really have to be thorough with socializing this dog, or any dog really. In the last few years I've known many people who have caught cases because their dogs have bitten people, usually the mailman. It's such a serious serious liability. Im surrounded by kids somewhat often also. Ill really have to learn to teach the dog when to be protective.

Definitely American bulldog. More protective instincts than a pitbull. More predictable than a rott. A fila brasilero will protect you family at 5 months old. They can get 200 pounds though.

@FM, I would give very careful thought before getting a dog that'll have extreme size and strength combined with guarding instincts, if you are not already very experienced raising dogs up. especially with kids coming and going who don't live with the dog. Sometimes it takes strong leadership skills to introduce an adult dog with guarding tendencies toddlers. they require a dog with extreme respect of humans and forgiveness about the falling on the dog, pulling, squealing sounds, etc. In the other thread, you mentioned wanting to have kids. You don't have them yet, so a pup will not be raised in-home with them.
Most of the time, just the presence of a dog with some warning bark will make potential intruders move on to an easier target.

@Miguel :-o
Please direct additional caveat toward potential novice buyers about both sides of your experience with such dogs. Unintentional mishaps happen even at your level of handling experience. Add to that, the difficulty of knowing the background dogs in these cane corsos.
Most these readers are in America. we have ruined every working breed that has ever landed on our soil.
The more instincts involved, the greater risk that dogs have not been selectively bred with carefulness toward their minds.

You do not need a quard dog... you just need a good watch dog.. a dog that has a good sounding bark.. and will respond to strangers with caution until the stranger is acceptable to you..... any dog is a deterrent.. usually burglers will go past the house with a dog .. they just rather not deal with a dog and the unknown..... so any good size dog...even a lab will protect by barking .. it sounds like your wife needs a good disposition dog.. i would start with lab or shepard mix... a mixed breed will do the job. As far as the rabbit.. bring a pup home and introduce them and the puppy will grow up loving the rabbit.. bring an older dog in you would need to find out its background or test it with small animal behavior attitude..some would accept it and some would love to chase it.. depends on the personality of the older dog.. any breed is capable of this.. good luck
