What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ty all for the advice regarding the dog. I'm going to have to cancel my plans to get a dog. The break in caused my wife to develop some problems with the pregnancy due to stress. Doctors put her on full bed rest so getting a dog right now is just out of the question.
sorry to hear of your wife's new problems :-(
In a situation like this, consider a BOLO for an adult dog from a known background who just needs rehoming (owner moving & can't keep) -already housebroken & well behaved etc., can provide a sense of security and is low maintenance.
Take care.

Hi Eric,
Im sorry to hear of the current situation your break in has put you in. Although my gf isn't pregnant, we have had the stress of a recent break in also. I hope you and your family get through this soon. Good luck.

ps. please let us continue our discussion on choosing a dog :)

looks like a good guard dog is a cat.

definitely! :D
As for my dog search, Im still looking. It seems trying to find a dog isn't as easy as it used to be, even here in Southern California.
Talking to my neighbors, Im irritated to say I live in a hot neighborhood. Both my neighbors have had break ins in the past year, now weve had an attempted home invasion blocks away.
I have not been to any shelters, as I am only familiar with one in the area.

Have you used petfinder yet? It could help locate other shelters and rescues and lets you search by breed. And the shelter you know should have at least a basic knowledge of the shelters. I can think of at least dozen different places from san Francisco to Sacramento in the bay area of California and that's not counting the minor local shelters

Hi Mike,
No I haven't tried petfinder, I will check them out. I haven't been to a shelter in probably 15 years. Any thoughts on what is a good age for adoption? Will that vary with breed? I know there will be dogs of all ages there.

It varies depending on your needs. I personally prefer older shelter dogs honestly. Any age is suitable for adoption but not every dog matches a family. uploadfromtaptalk1400530493529.jpguploadfromtaptalk1400530471203.jpg two older boxers Im currently working with at my shelter and if I had choose a dog out of all our current dogs these two would be second and third. I have another favorite I'm considering adopting lol

I see. I've only had a dog from a puppy, and most of my friends also, so
I never really thought about adopting an adult dog. I think I would be a little reserved when playing with an adult dog. Also I live with my gf. This is going to be her first dog. No matter what she says, dogs intimidate her and I can see it and know the dog will see it too, so I would think a puppy would be best for us?

If a dog intimidates her a adult is perfect. Puppies will through that adolescent phase and be a pest. Plus training a adult who more than likely knows something already is easy, starting from scratch is not fun from a first timer. What size, breed, gender are you looking for? Also energy level, what are your expectations from the dog?

Thanks Mike,
Im interested in a medium to large breed, female. Id like a dog with relatively low energy. Safety is first, but the dog is expected to do a fair amount of guarding, also okay with being home alone the first half of the day.
