What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Mike,
Im interested in a medium to large breed, female. Id like a dog with relatively low energy. Safety is first, but the dog is expected to do a fair amount of guarding, also okay with being home alone the first half of the day.

Yea puppy won't be doing that tills its probably a year to 2 years old. And no guarding breed is mellow until middle aged. Any breed in specific you're interested in?

wow. hmm...
Well, I have a friend who's grandparents breed Cane Corsos. Just yesterday I had a chance to meet a young female( 11mos) from their line, and she was an absolute delight. I hadn't considered one before but it wouldn't cost me much more to adopt 1 from them vs a shelter dog. I really have been impressed with female pitt bulls also, I think they have the energy level Id be happy with too. Im just afraid of the dogs I may attract if I just said I wanted a pitt.
I like Labs, and Shepards, I was thinking Rott, but Ive read they can be unpredictable?

They aren't unpredictable and a 11 month old female cane corso sounds like a good match just make sure she's well socialized and understands when to act as a guard.

Thanks Mike,
If the CC doesn't pan out, what other breeds might fit what I'm looking for?

A medium sized mixed breed from a shelter should work. Many breeds act as a guard/alarm system. But you need medium to low so that knocks out most shepherd breeds. Honestly a mastiff may fit what you need. I like great Danes personally. Their very presence is a deterrent and woe to the person that tries to take one on

try Craigslist PETS in communities within your driving area, and use the search term "housebroken" and "housetrained" separately. look about twice a week to catch new listings.
of course you'll still have to screen the dogs yourself.

here's one of the youngest Lg breeds I've seen listed as housebroken.

two, more mature females, owner willing to separate.

only posting examples. no idea what they're like.

A great Dane, albeit awesome and imposing is not a guard dog.
