What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1 on the Airedale. I am on my 2nd one. Protection trained both of them. The 1st one proved himself when I caught 2 guys stealing a bench off my porch one night. He ends up with both of them on the ground and kept them there til the cops arrived. They do not shed and are great with kids. My youngest was born when he was about 1. Was never anything but gentle and protective. He would always herd any other man away from her. Puppy and 100 lbs pic's attached.

I have a german shepherd/black lab mix and he's the friendliest dog ever, unless someone else opens the front door. It's only happened a few times (neighbor's friend opened the wrong door and my apartment manager came for a scheduled check while i was in the garage) but he scared them right back out the door. He's about 90lbs and has a deep throaty growl that still surprises me while playing tug of war. If u can't find a mix I would definitely recommend a thoroughbred shepherd. My gf's family has black labs and they're great dogs but not nearly as protective or intimidating as our mix.

My friend has 2 rottweilers and u would have to be an idiot to break into that yard. He also used to have 2 Louisiana catahoula leopards that were the best guard dogs I've ever seen, big and fast with a pack mentality but they got out too often and bit his neighbors so they eventually had to be given away. Wouldn't trust them around small animals like a rabbit either. We have 2 cats and our dog is scared of them lol

I know you said your wife doesn't want one but I love my rottie. She is the best guard dog. Nothing comes into our yard without us hearing about it from her. She is extremely protective of my gf and the little dog. I don't mind that people are afraid of her. I know, if needed, she will protect my family and home.

I lived in Detroit for several years (not the best neighborhood either) but i made it known that i had 2 big rotts and while other houses were getting broken into..mine was left alone.

I moved out and my sister moved in. I left the dogs there and she still hasn't had any problems.

If you're looking for pure intimidation look into a Doberman. I have an 80lb 6month old PUPPY and he scares people to death.

I've owned many German Sheppards aswell growing up and ive learned they can develop a bad "nipping" habit which can injure kids.

It might sound silly but i had a 7lb wienerdog/Chihuahua mix that was the meanest most fearless dog I've ever owned. Make a lot of noise when strangers were in the house and would bite first ask questions later hahah

Goodluck!

I myself have a Rottweiler they are great with kids and family very protective by nature smart easy to train and laid back but they are very good at judging character if your rott don't like them you shouldn't and hard not to be afraid of a 140 or so dog

I know what isn't a good guard dog a English bulldog lol our fat boy diesel would be like that all state commercial of the chaos guy playing a guard dog while robbers ransack the house and they give him a bone and he's like "you guys are great!" That's diesel he would watch my house get robbed lol. Luckily we have a boxer/American bulldog mix and she's very protective and a great guard dog.

As for if I had to choose a best one I'd go with German shepard or a great dane. We always had a Dane growing up and there's nothing more intimidating than that bark.
