whats a good quality heater for a 180 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally I wouldnt trust a heater that boast 200g more then the average 300w heater! Post count dont equal knowledge. 1 300 wat heater for a 180 gal tank, that has to be the worst advice i have heard on this site. I dont like to take risk being a cheapo.

I never questioned your post count or knowledge. I spoke form personal experience of using both products in my own fish tanks. And I qualified it with the fact that the persons circumstances are not the same as mine and the results may be different.

Also being aware of how much the equipment can cost is not being a cheapo, in fact many of us here pursue the hobby with a budget (at least you do if your married!).

So if its not my money I guess I could reccomend just about anything, so if three 300 watt heaters (900 watts) is good than thirty six 25 watts (900 watts) is even better, right? This really would distribute the heat the best now wouldn't it? It really is the ultimate fail safe... Come on I did not attack you personally at all, so dont call me a "cheapo" who gives bad advice or that I pick on people with low post counts as not having knowledge. None of that is true.

Not to cause any more issues but when you buy a Deep Dimension 300g, notice what they include: http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3730+21462&pcatid=21462

They only give you two 250watt heaters... Thats only 500watts for 300 gallons!

Ive always heard it said the way 12 Volt Man said it, to figure 3 watts per gallon. So you basically need 540 watts for a 180 then (not 900). In fact on my 210g that I'm setting up has 600 watts for it. With the Hydor ETH 300 watt in-lines only being rated at 80g each, I still know I will not have issues. I ran a single on a 120g with no problems.

OK you suggested 1 300 wat heater for 280 gallon tank....I think we can all agree that is bad advice and there is no need to get mad, just try and learn. Honestly Im more concerned with this guy getting good advice then your feelings, So if I see you giving bad advice im going to correct it. Next time learn not rant.

One of the most dangerous devices in failure is your heater. If it breaks it will either not produce heat or overproduce heat, both scenerios can kill your fish in less then a day. Which i promise if your in this hobby for 20+ years at least 1 will fail. Thats why they are the only equipment I dont by used and take no chances. I also work in general construction and know how common it is for houses heating system to fail. So when it comes to heaters I usually shy away from the standard and go with inline, not only more reliable but WAY WAY WAY more effecient, considering the "element" doesnt contact fish it can run hotter and less frequent + you can replace parts not entire system. But for standard scenerios the equation is 2-3Watts per gallon per 5 degrees above room temp. I give my tank 4-6 and keep broken up between 2-3 heaters to prevent 1's failure from killing my fish but on my tnks larger then 150 i use inline. Just search this forum from and you'll find countless threads of people finding the whole tank dead from heater maltfunctions

So my over all advice like I said before is 2x 300 wat heaters. Pick them on price, preference, and warranty. If your room temp though is cooler then 15o i personally would get a 3rd ( an extra 25$ shouldnt make the wife kill you). Though you can be like this guy and trust a brand advertising 4x the normal rate....but i learned to not to believe advertising in the fish world a loooonnnggggg time ago.

Although i do recommend the
Eheim Jager Thermostat Heater over anything else. Its a reliable company, very very low price compared to quality, and is able to be recallibrated. Defentially the best budget heater out there. But I dont know if I trust their 4x heating claims, I would still trust the normal equation even with this heater.

on my 225 i was running a single 300 watt heater and it worked just fine. i recently added another on the opposite side of the tank just in case of failure and also help the work load. btw that tank is 8 foot long. lots of opinions on brands. i run 90% jebo just for the price. ive never had any problems whatsoever.then again i have to cut some corners cause i run so many tanks. if i only had 3 or 4 tanks maybe id spend more on a heater but i dont see the need. the only tank im running that i even wonder about is one that has a stealth heater in it. ive heard horror storys. i also heard the have fixed the problems with them but stilll

lol no. 300 watt is usually recommened to raise a 75-100 gal by 5 degrees, so 900 wats would only be able to raise his tank 7-12 degrees at most, not over-kill. Ive never used Eheim but i couldnt imagine their much different, though they boast 300wat for 275gal its only to raise it by 5 degrees above room tempeture. So ehiem might boast 275 gal but if your house must remain at a temp of 74, I learned not to trust advertising a long time ago. 300w x3 should be no more then 70$ from a reputable company.

Wrong wrong wrong

The Eheim 250w heaters are good for up to 159 gallons.
A 300w Eheim will definitely heat a 180 just fine by its self.

I am certain a 250w heater BY IT SELF would have no problems at all heating a 180g tank.

You need to do some reading and some trial and error...on being a cheapo.
Ive got a single 250w heater in a 125g tank right now. Tank is in a basement that is a constant 70-71 degrees.
Tank water is a constant 80.3 degrees give or take .4 degrees. Ive seen the heater kick on 3 times in 10-12 minutes for
30-55 second intervals.

OP said 180g, NOT a 280g. And as an owner/user of a 300watt Eheim heater I believe a single would work fine in this situation.

And my feelings were not hurt, you were the one to take offense and thought it had to do with your low post count and knowledge.
