Whats in the future for fishkeeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hopefully this fishkeeping hobby is like a trend that will NEVER go away for good! Like somethings... clothing, cars, Hairstyles, skateboarding... etc. These get into being very popular for a certain amount of years, then not very for awhile, but then eventually will come back into the Trend!
An addition to this Great site... we need to talk more about this wonderful hobby to people that we randomly meet regardless if its at your lfs, school, party, or wherever. Im sure every little bit matters and will increase the amount of fishkeeping hobbyist throughout the Future! :headbang2

I would more likely connect it with pets as a trend...dogs cats etc.

It will be what is the newest found breed or strain and newest equipment that keeps this hobby alive.

here's what i see happening: all the common fish we have today will be close to extinction, so they will be banned for sale. then, asian aros will finally be legal for sale in the US!!! :headbang2

In some parts of the civilized world they actually speak of banning all wild caught fish ... That would be a disaster

I see the hobby getting better. I got in this hobby when I was 11 and will be 20 in april. I've gone from baiting traps in lake keowee at my old house and putting bluegill and bass and catfish in there to keeping well not bluegills catfish and bass from a lake lol. I think the younger people are what keep it alive, but a lot of thing are misinformed which is sad. They say nemo nemo, or when they see the RTGG in the 210 at my LFS they say look at that big a** goldfish, I mean what looks farther from a goldfish than a gourami right??? It is sites like MFK that do good for the fish keeping hobby. This site gives people the knowledge and direction that people need to know about. It also has great people and the MFK forum is SECOND TO NONE!!!!!!

One sad thing Ive noticed is the disappearance of the Mom and Pop Petshops which are slowly being replaced by the teenage no nothings of big corporations!

:(
:irked: I cant help but agree with this sentiment. We had 2 Mom and Pop shops in the area where I live, 1 just went under a few months after Pet Smart opened, the other is going fine for now. They get all my business, I wont shop at Pet Smart.
If I see anything happening in the future it would say it would be more people buying farm bred fish and aquarium supplies over the internet, less wild caught fish for sure and advances in filtration methods based on lessons learner from municipal water treatment plants / fish hatcheries.

Fishkeeping will never die. I will however state that most of my generation (I just turned 21) has no interest. Most of them don't have any interest in anything. They have too much crap going on to take much time for hobbies.

I started being facinated with bodies of water, keep various sliders and musk turts as a kid.
One day when I was in elementary school I snagged a few drab colored goldies out of my late great grandmothers pond and setup a basic 20L, a few weeks later they colored up. All the browns and greys turned to oranges, blacks, whites, yellows and reds. I was hooked.
I ended up with a community of rather large gouramis in a 29gal. Got rid of them after a few years due to being constantly moved due to the military.
I ended up trying to start a new community 3 years ago, gouramis and a Red devil that caught my eye named her Dahlia. I hadn't done any research on devils let alone much cichlids.

Long story short the RD killed everything, I moved 8 hours away for college and my mother watched after the RD. It killed everything in her 55gal, I came back a year later to visit for the holidays and saw the RD in 4 inches of green water, no heater and no filter. She had apparently given up on the hobby and had a gross disregard for the life ot the fish. I brought her back to the new house I just purchased and am working on getting back into the hobby on a MUCH larger scale.

Well....I didn't realize I wrote that much but it seems a waste to delete it :p

A very broad question but whats in the future for fishkeeping?

Saw an picture of an old undergravel filter and started thinking...

Where do you think this hobby is going? Any thoughts on new trends?

I hope to see new advances in filtration. :) I also think many of the rarer species will continue to become more and more rarer and expensive.:irked:

Due to man's caving of building into the enviroments of our beloved fish, I see more wild fish becoming endangered, or extinct....Most, if not all fish will be bred commercially and privately....The price of fish will be determined by who bred what....No more wild impots because there will be no more, or it will just be highly illegal to catch and sell wild stock.....

As far as the mechaniks of the hobby goes, more and more young bored geniuses are entering this hobby....Wha's next???Lasers that scan the tank from left to right once a week, zapping any "bugs" swimming about our friends...Or a liquid drop that is 100% proven to get ANY fish pair to breed...
