what's in the QT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had great success using safestart for cycling tanks too using the same exact method J jaws7777 is describing. Looks like they've got you on the right track clm08k clm08k

Thanks everyone! Right now the danios are out and about, looking healthy.
Got the plants today. Ordered some more! :) The owner also gave me some big driftwood pieces and rocks from his old tank.

Almost poly time.
Right now the water level is about 2 inches low. Want to add water, but I am afraid of killing the BB....Parameters: everything still 0. I'm feeding them freeze dried blood worms and spirulina flakes every day now. twice a day.

@jaws777 for cleaning right now I use either 5 gal buckets and siphon to clean the water(90%) of time, or a garden hose. Then I fill the tank up with a garden hose. So i wouldn't mind rinsing the sponges and things in dirty tank water buckets. How often do I need to rinse out the sponge and charcoal? Does the charcoal actually have to be replaced every month? how often do I need to clean out the actual filter?

J jaws7777 , magpie magpie , kno4te kno4te , ocellatus ocellatus , kewpiefishypewpie kewpiefishypewpie : Thank you for helping walk me through the cycling process. I'm sure there will be tons of questions on my part as the water parameters start to change. hhaha. No doubt. And with the plants....so they don't die.

That looks great!

A word of caution with garden hoses. Some come impregnated with chemicals to fight bacterial / fungal growth and can have an adverse effect on your bb and fish. If it's new, check the packaging as this is usually an advertised selling feature.

If you're not sure, it wouldn't hurt to run your water through the hose for a few minutes before use to clear any residual chemicals, as they will have built up in the leftover water / moisture from the last fill.

Or you could always invest in a python drain/fill system.

I'm liking the progress Chelz! It's nice to see danio still fine.
Thanks Sam! Everything is coming around slowly but surely. It is amazing they are still alive. They are spastic, but I like them. Although I might have a panic attack if they freak out once I set up the disco lights.

thanks, O! I've been on the fence about the hose usage for a while... it makes me uneasy cause I've heard about the chemical potential, but I still haven't got a replacement method yet. I've always wanted a python, but the price typically deters me. However, maybe I'll just go for it.

Thanks, Frank. You are way too kind! Seriously. Really appreciate all of your guidance and helping me set the tank back up. Its taken me a long time with life getting in the way, but I can't wait until it's fully set up so I can enjoy it again! Been a long time coming.

Thanks Kno4te! That was very kind. You are too nice! Really appreciate you helping with all my sick fish. And reminding me to check water parameters!
Another fan just rooting for you! :)

Yay for plants!!!!

How deep is the sand around the plants? Might check that it's not more than 2" deep so it doesn't build pockets.
Thanks, Mags! You've inspired me so much with your plants and polys. Hopefully I will be able to find a "green thumb." Right now the sand is 1-2 inches.

I ordered 12 more swords, 5 anubias nana and 4 corkscrew Val's. But I think I might cancel 8 of the swords. I think that might be too many plants for my tank. What do you think? I still want to leave parts of it relatively open. Might have gone a little overboard.

Ok cool re: depth- just being sure!

The swords eventually will get really large. It's up to you if you want to pull them later as they grow or wait until they grow. I only have 2 now and they take up a lot of room. 12 is a lot, but again with baby plants they are small so you can pull later if you want.

A python is worth its weight in GOLD. It makes WC so much easier. IMO don't even hesitate. Put the money you'll save on the swords to the python. Plus it'll last forever. I bought a replacement piece once for cheap, and other than hat have been using the same one for many years.

You've got this clm08k clm08k !
