what's in the QT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Get your lighting situation figured out for the plants. You chose low light plants but a 10 gallon hood on a 55 gallon isn't even really low light LOL. I have an LED, but have no experience on the strip lights.

I would worry about polys eating the pea puffer (they are so small!) and the puffer being potentially nippy. ;)

Are you going to QT the polys or go for the main tank? If QT first, be sure that one is cycled too. Be sure to keep testing the QT - if it has ammonia (question there d/t BP behavior) it will hurt the new polys. I know you're excited but I would really be sure that your numbers are stable in all tanks before buying them.

Yayyy for nitrates! (One of the few times we want nitrates haha)

Thanks for the light information. lol I had no idea. Was thinking that could be "low light" :p. Luckily they get some indirect light from outside. Think I'm gonna go with the sun blaster. Unfortunately 90% of my paychecks right now are going to health insurance and weekly doctors appointments. (Yay being an adult). So I have to wait until I get paid again.

For the polys, I would like to put them in the QT first because it makes me feel reassured that they are "clean." Lol.Trying to save up to order from wetspot. Hopefully will be able to order next paycheck or two. At least that will give me time to cycle it I think? :) that is a great point you make about the BP and ammonia. Will start testing it too. Right now I'm just running a sponge filter(don't know if that makes a difference).

lol it's funny cause I've never had nitrates before and was exciting, but also confused what to do next. J jaws7777 thanks for breaking it down for me! lol I Didn't know whether or not to do a water change. :p

Let us know how all of the numbers work! Yeah, a sponge filter is fine but if there was no other established media in there you're going through a cycle in the QT. So if you're going to QT them first, just be sure that before you buy the polys both tanks have no ammonia nor nitrites. Just to assure they have a good jump start on health. These next polys of yours are going to be long lived! :D

Which ones are you thinking now at this point in time?

Yay! Thanks for the reminder. Maybe I can put the puff in the QT to cycle it? Before I get the polys? Still trying to figure out what to do with her. My mom calls her Dory cause she's always looking lost and does her own thing. Torn between getting more pea puffs or putting her somewhere else.

The poly want to save up for is a moke. Especially after seeing your Soba and @cohazards. The other two I want to keep a secret for a box thread.

Nice!

i think they can live solo in a 5 gallon or yeah, you could get more of them in a slightly bigger tank. Some are ok with shrimp I guess, others keep them with Otos or FW bumblebee gobies (which WetSpot has).

They are so cute! I wanna see pics!

Whats the plans for qt ? If a week parasite treatment then maybe no need to stress the qt cycling thing. I usually do 2 rounds of pg (4 days) then a couple more to see if it eats if alls good in the hood thats it.

If planning tp leave in qt to observe than maybe get it cycled

Yeah, I was looking into it when my Betta was acting weird (he's fine now) they are LITTLE. Only for one though. If you want more this article says 3-5 gallons per puffer but I've read on forums that you should err on the side of more room with a group, so 5 gallons per puffer. Some will do 3 in a 10 gallon if it's heavily planted... it's a mixed consensus thing from what I've read.

Caveat - I have zero direct dwarf puffer experience! ;)
