I think you're going to have a very difficult time finding any American fish in Australia. Look around and see what's available, then we might be able to help you choose from your available species.

Good Idea, I'll have to have a look around.

What part of the US is she from? Do a biotope that represents the watershed of the area she is from...there is lots of diversity here

She is from Georgia.

Cheers for all the suggestions fellas, you are helping alot! 8)

I beleive hes looking to buy/import native species not catch them ;)

If I'm not mistaken Australia has strict laws regarding the importation of non-native species so unless it is already living on the continent I doubt he'll be able to get it. Catching them is likely his only option.

I suppose the LFS might carry some (though I highly doubt it) but you would have to ask them.

I'd kick and scratch to get my hands on some longear sunfish. Prettier than discus.

I know our pet shops supply a heap of cichlids, what sorta cichlids are from the U.S?

Only one, the Rio Grande or Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus) and it's only in the southernmost tip of Texas. Georgia fishes include a large variety of sunfishes, darters, minnows, catfishes, and killifishes, but few that are common in the pet trade. Sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) are native to coastal Georgia; can you get those?

Im not too sure, the name sounds familiar, we might? I'll have to look into it. I reckon I'll go to all the pt shops and write down all the fish I see, and then come back here and ask which ones are American, lol.

Ooh, the dragonfish or violet goby (Gobioides brousonettii) is another coastal GA native that's common in pet stores, at least over here. The gobies are brackish, while sailfin mollies are euryhaline, so you could keep them together in a brackish tank.

Cheers, I'm going to write down all the names you suggested, and take a list to the fish shops, and anywhere here and see if anyone supplies them. 8) Anymore names for the list?

A few American fish are sometimes available in Europe; if I had to guess I'd say they're the ones most likely to be available in Australia as well. The ones I've heard mentioned by Europeans are:

Pygmy sunfish (Elassoma)
Shiners (Cyprinella and Notropis)
Dace (Phoxinus)
Fathead minnows (Pimephales)
Sunfish (Lepomis and Enneacanthus)
