I dont have a completely bare bottom tank. I have a very thin layer of sand and it is bare in some spots.

This isnt because im lazy, its just that if I have to stir up the gravel all the time my aro will jump.

stirring up the gravel/sand sometimes will also stir up harmful bacteria tt can be harmful to the fish.

Hmmm... my opinon is that bare bottom or gravel filled tank is up to individual, as

long as we can keep the fish in tip top conditon, that would do....

i prefer bare bottom since i like the fish more that the fishtank itself. also, with messy eaters, i prefer bare so i can scoop out any uneaten food or fish droppings in there on a daily basis.

Are you refering to aneroebic bacteria in deep sand beds? If not its the first i've every heard of harmful bac in the substrate, which i find hard to believe

There have been cases here where arowana deaths have occured due to this.

This is mainly due to improper care of the gravel.

By improper care of gravel do you mean it wasn't gravel vaccumed enough?

In heavily planted tanks you don't gravel vac too thoroughly, the detritus is beneficial to the plants, but the fish don't have any ill effects from this.

thats if u have plants.

With arowanas its very rare to keep them with plants.

Yes... it wasnt well maintained and vacummed or had undergravel filters.

interesting.. this has become a droop eye thread. but yea, i agree that bb tanks is not the cause of droop eye either. To me , its genetics and diet. Genetics more than diet to be more specific.

i personally beleive that maintaining a natural environment for fish decreases stress on a fish which in return provides many benefits

For me it's easier to clean, plus throw in a plant or two and a log, it will do wonders giving the tank a simple, but elegant look.
