I just remembered the Chinese Algae eater I bought for my 55g way back in 2006. The tank was thick with algae and I thought, "Cool. I won't have to feed him for a few days at least". The next morning he seemed rather plump and I was a little worried. Later that day I found him with his belly split right open. He'd apparently eaten himself to death.

Like Pizza-The-Hut! Sad tho. How quick does bloat or dropsy set in?

Yeah, I have only observational evidence on that one. I will say he ate more algae in that day and a half than I imagined possible. Also, trailing out of his open belly were intestines packed with green algae matter. Maybe he had a blockage or something, but -blockage or not- I honestly believe that is was the sheer rate of consumption without enough excretion that did him in. There were no signs of dropsy and typically bloat takes longer to kill. No other fish in the tank were affected.

my sisters old goldfish was swimming and got caught on part of the filter, then all of a sudden it just stopped and turned over to reveal all its organs floating about lol

one of my first fish (head and tailight tetra) got under my gravel and i had an undergravel filter and it got sucked up and chopped up pretty badly and after that i was done with undergravel filters

I had tiretrack eel escape and, since they like to hide anyway, didnt notice he was missing for a few days. Found tiretrackjerky on the floor a while later.

OMG. Me too! Except I found him that very day by stepping on him as I approached the tank. Ewwww.
