What are there natural predators in the wild, Rob?

For an adult goliath, just BIG crocs, humans and other GATF. When considering fish only, goliaths are THE apex predator in Africa. Nile perch are no trouble; brevis, goliath and tanzaniae are all known to routinely kill and eat Nile perch larger than they are.

what's your view on the armatus then?

Given either equal sizes or max sizes (GATF gets MUCH larger), the armatus has the tools to injure the GATF but the goliath has the tools to almost instantly kill the armatus. An adult goliath could carve out a five pound chunk of armatus in one bite, backbone included. An armatus would only kill the GATF if it landed an extremely lucky bite.

I can't believe that no one mentioned about SuperOscar's killer plecos!

/thread lol

GATF have even been known to take chucks out of and kill large crocs. I'd definitely say GATF is the ultimate apex pred ever until you bring nessy out of hiding LOLOL ;)

May you cite the source? I only saw a barramundi swallow an African tiger fish, or even an Endlicheri swallow an African tiger fish, not the other way around. IMO, African tiger fish is a smelt with teeth. They can only prey on fish smaller than them. As for armatus, it's a tetra with teeth. Either one of them can be match with same size of fish in the bass/perch family

I don't think its top kick because I like it, I like it because its the top kick. :p

Its the ONLY thing in freshwater that has the weapons to take out the big cats or an arapaima. The only thing I doubt its ability to kill is a gator gar thanks to the ganoid scales. Simply put, a large adult GATF has the tools to kill any other large fish in freshwater except for the biggest gator gars and has more than enough maneuverability and speed to evade the smaller fish that could compete against it.

A fish this powerful and maneuverable with such an incredible weapon system has the tools to effectively handle anything else. It is the epitome of freshwater predatory evolution.

Granted I do love them, but how can anyone argue their supremacy? It swims like a wahoo and bites like a tiger shark!
I thought you know about African tiger fish. It can only swim forward in a straight line, suck at maneuver. How can it be supremacy when it can only attack fish that's in front of it, and can't defend itself from danger from above, below or on either sides?

GATF are in the characin (or tetra) family. Natgeo had a documentary on this species and I don't remember it being a cumbersome fish at all. And there are accounts of them eating chucks out of crocodiles much larger in length and weight. Would be fun to see an animation of army and GATF go at it though ;)

Lewis, D. (1976). The food and feeding habits of Hydrocynus forskahlii Cuvier and Hydrocynus brevis Günther in Lake Kainji, Nigeria. Journal of Fish Biology, 6 (4): 349-363. That article specifically addresses brevis' Nile perch predation, wherein it attacks the perch by amputating the back third of the fish and then feeding on the perch at its leisure once it's been incapacitated. Admittedly, the tanzaniae and goliath attacks are anecdotal, but the fact that one species of the genus is scientifically proven to do it lends a large amount of credibility to the other reports.

All the tigers I've kept can turn on a dime and are able to get out of tight spots by pushing themselves backward with their pectoral fins. They can't go backward very quickly, but short of knife fish, most fishes can't. Could that be an artifact of my keeping them slim and in a habitat that simulates their natural habitat? I feel it is likely so. Most ATF in tanks are obese and it doesn't surprise me that they lack maneuverability.

i'm surprised someone didn't mention the legendary 20"+ oscars......i hear those things are vicious!
