Okay, we all know the world is full of idiots but some are beyond comprehension. Post stories, pictures, or videos of those who could easily win the Darwin awards of pet keeping. To start this thread off, here is a video and a story:

This guy is housing a mata mata, a fly river turtle, an alligator snapper, a sideneck turtle of some sort, and a bunch of non-compatible fish in the same aquarium. It must be nice to have that kind of money to essentially throw away.

Next up is an idiot that sent me a video (but his whole channel was deleted probably after a flood of hate mail) of him milking a cottonmouth with no reason at all. That is not even the bad part. He did not have anything required to keep venomous. He used salad tongs- SALAD TONGS- to hold the snake and kept it in an aquarium without so much as a basking platform and a standard aquarium hood that I am pretty sure an anole could escape from.

What are your stories? we all know at least one...

Edit: Let's try to avoid stories of blatant animal neglect or abuse to prevent emotions from running too hot. We all know those stories too unfortunately but let's keep this thread more lighthearted than that.

Oh man. I know Ive seen worse but the first thing that comes to mind for me was a guy I saw at one of the Hamburg PA reptile shows last year. He bought a 2 foot American Alligator, and was carrying it around in his arms with a taped mouth. I was outside getting some air, and the guy walks out and starts talking about how it is really tame and all that. He takes the tape off the jaws, and it immediately bit his left arm near his elbow. He then got his friend and they walked to his car with the alligator still on his arm. I don't know how that ended...

Then a similar situation with an 3 foot iguana when it was brought outside. That thing saw daylight, and before anybody knew what happened, it was gone. And that was a very calm and nice Iguana, according to the owner.

I know I can think of some more, but I'm too tired right now. They were some good examples of stupidity for me though.

^ I was at the Hamburg show also when a guy wanted to hold a vendor's 3 or so foot burmese python. The vendor warned the guy not to handle it as it was a very aggressive specimen but the guy says "OH no I can handle it I know snakes it won't bite!!". Next thing you know the snake is latched on to his arm and there's blooood all over. Methinks he needed some stiches for that one :grinno:

Oh man, I work at a pet store... I get to hear and see stupidity all day long.

Currently, I have a customer who picked up a gator illegally, he's housing it in his bathtub. He comes in to buy large comets and koi to feed it... I'm waiting to see him come in one of these days missing fingers or something.

Unfortunately most of my stories are about abuse and neglect, because I'm a vet and I experience way too many bad owners. These stories are hilarious though... especially the ones about people getting bitten after claiming they know what they're doing. Awesome.

Saw the video you posted and its such a shame that the person did that particular combo of turtles because done correctly it could actually work in that tank. If he didnt put the mata and the snapper, flys sometimes do great with larger snake necks...sometimes no garantee. The aquascape its ok, if the bigger predarory fish were removed it could be great with the fly and perhaps the snake neck.
As for the worse thing ever dont go any further, I even made a thread about it like 2 years ago or something. A zoo here with the most HORRIBLE reptile house you can imagen, allmost all animals were sick, with open wounds, rotting tails, completly unexcusable:irked: Fortunatly that park closed its reptile house and the rest of the animals are being looked after by a entertainement company...sort of...never liked that kind of "animal trainers".

Bwahaha. Thats great. Best part a two footer would hurt but not perma damage. So win win.

If you want to see stupidity check out youtube. I spend a lot of time on youtube and have seen tons of videos but my number one irritation is people who do "care videos" and keep their animals in bad conditions or someone who has had their animal less than two weeks and feels qualified to do a care video.

I will try to find some but I remember back before i got my tegu I was sifting through care videos. This guy did a care video on the giant argentine black and white tegu and let my just tell you this guy was a F-ing retard. One piece of information that stood out was he said that a full grown female can be kept in a 4'x2' enclosure bare minimum BUT he kept his in a 4'x18" enclosure! WTF! Moron! There was no UVB barely any substrate and no hide. Just one lousy heat lamp. This was a full grown 3ft female. He should be shot in the face. They proably took the video down by now because this was years ago. Oh and unless you have kept your animal at least to adulthood, I don't think your qualified to tell other beginners how to care for anything.
