Oh man, I work at a pet store... I get to hear and see stupidity all day long.

Currently, I have a customer who picked up a gator illegally, he's housing it in his bathtub. He comes in to buy large comets and koi to feed it... I'm waiting to see him come in one of these days missing fingers or something.

I used to work at a pet store, and had a customer with the exact same situation. If i recall correctly it would be a man or woman coming in each time, and they had at least one kid. Hopefully it didn't end up bad.

If i was desperate, on the verge of poverty i would still avoid working at a pet store at all costs. It feels great to offer great advice and have good customers. But in general the way chain stores are with reptiles and fish is extremely depressing...too much death and extremely ignorant people for me to deal with.

Yeah. The thing got him good though. Ive been bitten twice by gators. Once on my forearm when I slipped trying to grab one, and once on the upper leg when I got careless handling one and moved it too close to my body. Both times the perpetrator was between 2.5-4 feet, and thankfully neither bite required stitches, or even bled too much. But that little 2 footer did like 10 times as much damage as I experienced because the guy tried to rip it off when it bit him. Id be surprised if that guy didn't need stitches, he was dripping blood all over the parking lot on the way to his car.

haha, gators are always fun. been bit by countless babies but never anything over 2 feet. I bet he learned a lesson though. NEVER pull an herp off you if it bites.

hmmm the worst i saw was 2 baby allligator snapping turtles and a bunch of africans in a 10 gallon and the guy couldnt figure out why his fish were disapearing so i told him the turtles were eating them and he said no i feed them flakes they couldnt eat my fish so i just walked away -_-

I have this book written by a reptile house keeper at a zoo. One section of the book is about a string of breakins where people stole herps including several hots from the reptile house. One kid got caught because he ended up in the hospital after stealing a gaboon viper and trying to take it home with him on a CITY BUS in a BLACK PLASTIC TRASH BAG. Not surprisingly, it bit through the bag and tagged the guy's shoulder. A second kid stole a whole litter of hatchlings of some hot snake species and kept them in an open topped tank above the headboard of his bed!

...I'm starting to get to that point. I thought it was going to be great to work with all kinds of animals and help people out. But more often than not, I just go home irritated and upset over what people do. Hell, I work irritated and depressed, my boss kills things off left and right because he just doesn't know better.
