i get your point but the question still lies, did they reach their full potentials? still debateable as alot of fish continue growing. If they have, would they have reached that potential faster with a better diet?

i dont' know the answer. You and i agree on one thing though, your fish deserve a varied diet and that's all that matters.

Unless a person has the wherewithal to make a tank that is sufficient in gallons to replicate natural environment it is highly unlikely that a tank kept fish will EVER reach their full potential in regards to larger fish.

The tank that I am doing in the days to come will make one serious build thread as it will definitely be monster. When I build it I will for sure document the fish that go in from placement to full growth over the time they are in the tank. I just got my kids the movie despicable me and it made bells go off for me.

I would think that for a tank kept fish the ones in the picture I posted show very clearly that feeder fish are not a bad thing. Those iri sharks were about 3 feet long and the pacu 2 feet wide and 2 1/2 long.

I know that the keeper of that tank is not as picky about the food quality he feeds either.

All of my local LFS (LFSes, LFS's? whatever) seem to be catering their business toward people wanting the biggest baddest fish they can find. Multiple times ive heard the line "thats the meanest one we got" seal the deal on a purchase. Dont get me wrong, im not going all PETA on you guys and i love the fact that my jag or bullhead could one day eat my girlfriends chihuahua but i wouldnt actually do it. I dont really know what im ranting about, it just seems like too many people around here are in the hobby for the wrong reason. Somehow i blame michael vick for this one lol.

Funny, I didn't know about this thread until now.

I was in the lounge an hour ago talking about Vick on how so many people want his head on a platter, yet half the Cichlid owners here most likely throw goldfish in their tank to be chased, bullied, killed and eaten.

Ok ballin I thought rather than spend the time looking for the youtube video, I would show you a pic of a local tank in regina.

You tell me if these fish were stunted by their diet. My 7 year old is in for size reference

Honestly? That pacu looks stunted. It is too tall and short. Looks more like a giant silver dollar than a pacu. I would say it looks more like it was stunted from a small tank than malnourishment, though. Was it a rescue or did it grow up in that tank?

that would be the tank that it grew up in from the start of its life so far as I know

Comparing fish to dogs is like comparing dogs to humans. :screwy:
There is no comparison to make.
At least the fish being eaten would serve a purpose as food.

Probably the same reason pit bulls are so popular and the reason you find so many at shelters. Blame the owners.

Interesting thread!

I have to comment on this post. NO offense but IF Breeders Were MORE responsible, they would be proactive to find the right Owners and NOT just sell their pups to some goone looking for a potnetially mean dog to abuse!

It's all about ethical breeding! Just like breeding fish. Sure it's okay to let a generation, may two of siblings Spawn but to ensure variation in the gene pool, one must introduce new lineage on a regular basis if you want to have longevity of the species...
