Whats up with blood thirsty aquarists?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep fish that get along ... I have CA and SA cichlids, and there is always a certain level of "conflict" in the tank, but if it gets out of hand, someone has to go ...

like anything else in our society, it comes down to a question of taste ... and there is no accounting for taste ...

The way I see it. Let each keep their fish as they see fit. After all they are fish.

I may be biased since I can filet them and cook them very well. Yet, I have a real hard time gettting all uptight about fish dying and seeing people place them on the same level as other pets such as cats and dogs.

Fish as far as I have seen are a very brutal living creature that will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. I find it laughable when people place human quality traits on their fish.

I am not advocating keeping fish in poor conditions or substandard living spaces. Only saying that if someone wishes to see a fish rip apart other fish, so be it. It is their tank.

I presently have 13 tanks ranging from my baby grow out 5-15g to my 8ft 300g. I have mostly tanks over 140g and keep all kinds of fish.

My most recent rescue was a shoal of pira. I feed them mostly market shrimp and such. Though I do keep feeder fish that I gutload and do REALLY ENJOY WATCHING as the shoal of pira wipes a fish out of existence and makes it completely dissapear.

You may think what you like of me for saying this, but, they are my tanks and I will do as I see fit with them. And I COULD CARE LESS WHAT ANYONE THINKS OF ME FOR THIS BECAUSE FISH EAT FISH AND LIVING FOOD HOLDS MUCH MORE NUTRITION THAT DEAD FOOD OR DRY FOOD. Even though people say goldfish are bad food, I disagree when goldfish are packed full of high quality food they become high quality food. Though I also feed a variety of chiclids and other fish to my fish that eat fish.

I also wanted to add this. When I see soy, corn and wheat as the primary ingredients on fish food I really hesitate to accept that kind of food. I did an experiment on one of my tanks and switched to this kind of food just to prove a thought to myself.

Within 3 days 2 things happened, my water quality went to poop as did my filters(because of the dissolved solids which not only made the water cloudy but filled my filters with a sludge) and my fish began to look very bloated and sluggish.

I looked into it and came up with this. Fish are not really meant to eat wheat and such additives and their digestive systems had a hard time dealing with it.

For the most part I feed readily available raw seafood and high quality fish foods which use aquatic veggies as binders. And as well live food.

I feely admit I love watching my fish hunt for their dinner and am amazed at how wide some of the fish like my pikes and snooks can open their mouths.

it amuses me what people assume about you by your choice of fish. it's like you assumed that because a store said "this is the meannest we've got" or people ask what's the most aggressive fish on here that they all want to start fish fighting rings. you even threw in a mike vick reference

Fish fighting ring might not be a bad idea, alot less legal trouble if you get caught then dogs. i kid i kid

Fish fighting is an awesome sport, I recommend everyone get in touch with there local "betta" club:naughty:

did research on PETA for a report in schooling once they send millions on advertisements and kill thousands of animals because they say they don't have enough money to treat them. pretty crazy. sorry for the odd fact.

jamesscott, what do you say about the research that shows that gold fish have high level of thiaminase?

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_6/volume_6_1/thiaminase.htm

Well let me say a picture is worth a thousand words would you like me to take some pictures of my pike with a ruler beside him? How about I take a full tank shot of the fish that are with him who although they do not get a steady diet of feeder fish do not seem adversely effected or affected by the goldfish I have fed them.

There is also the youtube video of a petshop with it's 15-17 year old pacu who most definitely was not stunted by it's diet of nothing but feeder goldfish.

I would reiterate the words GUT LOADING, mixed with a healthy minimum month long quarantine period for any feeders I feed my fish.

Here is the list of ingredients on the back of the food container I have in front of me that I feed.

crude protein 38.1% min
crude fat 9.7% min
crude fiber 2.8% max
ash 10.5% max
moisture 14.5% max

protein as a % of dry matter 44.5%
fat as a % of dry matter 11.3%

ingredients in order of appearance. Shrimp meal, Euphausia pacifica plankton, Sardine meal, kelp, alfalfa, squid, salmon egg oil, spirulina, fish oil, garlic, minerals (calcium chloride, potassium iodide, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, manganese carbonate, zinc sulfate) MPAX tm (Marine Protein Amino eXtracts. hydrolysates, select amino acids(arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, cystine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine)) Vitamins(stabliized vitamin c, biotin, cyanocobalamine, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin E) Preservatives (ethyoxyquin, potassium sorbate) Carotenoid pigments (astaxanthin, canthaxanthin), and beta glucan.

Take note NO WHEAT, CORN OR SOY :) as well take note of the word in red in the ingredients.

The brand is Ocean Nutrition

And when your study of goldfish comprises feeding them a high quality food for a elongated period of time I would place my trust in it. There is a saying that I go by, You are what you eat. I believe that the same would not only qualify for feeder fish. As well the end result of what my fish look like speaks volumes that they are not stunted by a growth inhibiting hormone present in goldfish.

If you wish I will take some pics of the fish in my 300g who have had a diet supplimented by feeder gold fish. :naughty:
