BTW...your new avatar gets me all excited.

 , its only funny because its so true.

yes they are, i saw some nice lookin orange pikes at my lfs about 4''s long for 6.99 is that a good price, i wouldnt mind putting a few in a planted 29,ever had em?

Yup...well...actually no...i thought i had them...but turns out i had Crenicichla sp. 'xingu III'...the ones you are talkin about are Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I'...orange pike. Great fishies. They get large though, so 29gal isn't gonna cut it. They are kinda aunry as far as pikes goes as well. 125 would be big enough for life...but a bigger tank would help break up aggression. I would buy them all, that way they could pair up naturally, and it would help to remove aggression better. That is a great price too, specially at that size. Also know that as they get larger they are gonna change color....adults don't look like juv...this is the way it is wit most Lugubris pikes...;). Do a good on Crenicichla xingu I or Crenicichla sp. xingu I....should get plenty of info. Click on the images tab to see pictures! ;)

lol, buying them all would mean id have to house 50+pike, but wonder how long you i could keep 4 or 5 in a 29 any idea, my 220 isnt even set up yet, its been empty for almost a yr now, lol, brand new too. i want to make that a planted tank, and im betting some nice adult pike would make a nice addition to it! thanks for the info man, i think ill go pick a few up tho, ill get pics later;)

get at least 5 of them. That will help to break down the aggression and allow them to pair up. Get some 1" PVC pipe and cut it into 6" segments....then put it all over the tank. Pikes are out of sight out of mind cichlids...they don't see the problem...they leave them alone. They have high conspecific aggression though...so it can be tricky. They will 'school' together till they hit about 6 or so inches without to much aggression. But once they hit subadult watch out...aggression goes up...especially as they pair up. You'll have to get rid of the ones that don't pair up probably. Also, pikes are great for planted tankz cuz they don't really dig and stuff..so good choice. Only problem is they are very carnivorous and will try to eat fish...even if they may be to big. Elastic stomachs are a great adaptation for them. They can be anal towards other tankmates as well....and don't back down from a fight usually...so you gotta choose tank mates carefully. Even then its a hit and miss. Hope that helps....btw...they will be aight in that 29 gal for about two months tops....they grow fast...;)

wow, ok, ill have to keep em in a 75 then, guess the rbp goes back to his 29;)...... I can tell their eyes are too big for their stomachs, when i was at the shop one of the pikes was trying to swallow a rubberband the same size as it was... that was amusing

o ya, thanks for the info tho, wasnt exactly sure what a orange pike was.....and pike out there that have alot of color as adults?

The xingu I will still be attractive as adults....don't get me wrong....I'll post some pictures of some adult xingu I. I personally am fond of Crenicichla marmorata, Crenicichla lenticulata, Crenicichla sp. 'atabapo', Crenicichla sp. 'cobra', and Crenicichla acutorostris....some of the best lookin pikes out there...;)
