Whats your next filtration upgrade?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on my 600 ltr i have a project external canister(italian brand - very quiet and efficent filter, quite cheap to buy too.) pumping out 1800lph, an interpet hydor canister pumping out 900lph, both these filters have external heaters connected to their outflow tubes, and an eheim 2260 ( actually a 2250 bucket with the 2260 pump) full of bioballs. may upgrade to an eheim 2180 to get rid of the external heaters since they are not very reliable, and remove tyhe small hydor filter. i would like a bio denitrator too. i know sera used to manufacture them.

maybe before the nitrate filter i will add an aquadyne bead filter. see www.koicamp.com
it is cleaned by an air blower and then back flush.:)

the current cartridges do a great job but lots of work to wash em.:(

So im guessing this type of filtering is just meant for specific types of tanks?

Not like you could do this on a 100g or smaller? Well i guess you could but the cost...:(

John- How big would the "de-nitrator" tower have to be for your tank?

I am upgrading the w/d on my 175g. Right now it is a double chamber w/d with a commercial bio-wheel piggybacked on the sump. Also have a UV. Run with quiet one 3000 and 5000 pumps

Over xmas break I plan to upgrade big time!
Adding FB600 filter in the sump
Adding a secondary 15g sump to hold heaters, the biowheel, uv, and FBF
Swapping out quiet one pumps for a sequence dart!!!
Gonna be a tight squeeze, but all will fit under the stand...

For 10k gallons you would need tons of pipe and a slow flow to rob the air of oxygen. That denitrator will have to be a monster. A single unit would be good but multiple parallel units would give a higher flow rate without the chance of aeration.

For my 519 I was planning on 12x pieces of 2" pvc that were 22" long, each with a 50-75 foot 1/4" nitrification tubes. Each pipe only makes a drop a second because anything more will provide aerated water which will kill the denitrifying bacter.

the plan is to use plastic storage tanks min 6 ft high ( 2x 500 gallons)
filled with kaldness media for wastewater treatment (no tubes)

by slow flow ( 500 to 1000 gph ) there will be anoxic conditions for the bacteria to thrive in.

i am now trying to find the best food to feed the bacteria which eat organically available carbon....methanol is traditional but i think too toxic for the fish if not 100% consumed

see this or similar for design parameters http://www.amazon.com/Wastewater-Eng...7417932&sr=1-2

these bead filters were originally designed for fussy koi keepers.....i think the smallest model they offer would work for 600 gallon tank ( 1200 gal pond):)

You fussy thing! - :D

I'm planning on possible going central system with a large tank turned into a filter....and running my stingray pond and tank on one system...
