As long as its not hurting the population of the species, and your not letting it go ever, than I dont care.

What I dont understand at all, Is if snake heads are illegal to own in florida ( almost all of u.s) than why cant we keep the ones we catch, its helping to get rid of the population of non-native fish in the wild. and Its balancing out the system.

They remain illegal out of the fear that an individual may release them into a body of water they have not yet been introduced in.

Living by law isnt freedom. Each day they make more and more laws which slowly limit what you can do. I got arrested when I was 18 for swearing in public, how is that freedom? ( I said F you) Laws make revenue so they can buy what they want, they make stupid laws because they know people will always break them which gives them a constant supply of money. To serve and protect it is not. To steal and make wrong is.

Ever heard of the phrase... "The rights of your fist end with the rights of my face"? That is why laws are in place, to protect your rights while respecting the rights of other people.

The swearing in public law is stupid, but it was placed by lobbyists who don't want to hear that. I don't support it, but at least I can see the reasoning behind it.

Although I don't see the point in the piranha laws. If they are really that concerned with it, maybe they should treat all pets the same way they treat cats and dogs -- you need a permit or a liscense that is easy to obtain.

I personally don't care. If it's a fish thats threatened in the wild then I'm against it.

There is certain fish that are illegal that I would keep if I could find them.

I agree, but to elaborate, people like the dinks that released snakeheads and got them outlawed should be drug into the street and pistol whipped, but responsible keeping, im all for, say I went to maryland you better believe Id smuggle back some snakeheads, for ME not anyone else not the river etc... I say illegal (non-threatened) species should be able to get permits, I mjean hell I can get a permit right now free of charge for an american alligator in Illinois, all I have to do is make a telephone call, but I cant have a snakehead or asian aro, lest I risk incarceration for man a felony offense by smuggling them. nobody really wanted my two cents, but I often rant about that, and now there is a thread for it!

*tear* thank you MFK

Are Ameca splendens really extinct? I have kept those!

Their official classification is "extinct in the wild".
The reason?
Someone (i'm betting the USA was involved, personally) decided that they could feed a lot of starving mexicans by stocking the ponds and rivers that the ameca splendens was native to with small mouth bass.
The bass, of course, ate all the amecas.
Presto, extinct amecas, lots of small mouth bass.

Irresponsible government fish keeping right there.

On the plus side (sort of) nobody really paid any attention so they're still legal to own/raise as far as i know.

There are also some wild colonies in arizona, those of course came from the aquarium trade.
I'm not really sure how i feel about that.

150-175mph is *fast*, anything hit at that speed is highly dead.
However, on a bike or car that is built for it (like a ducati or a porsche), it isn't *that* dangerous if there isn't anybody else in the area.

Now if there were any other cars, i officially don't like you much, as that isn't safe.
The rate you close with people at 175 (105mph...) doesn't really leave a lot of time for action, especially if they do something like move into the fast lane to pass another car.

On truely deserted roads however, thats fine with me.
I've only taken my car to ~110mph (89 honda prelude), and only when *nobody* was around.
I feel like it is my right to risk my own life.
It is not my right to risk anybody elses.

The unfortunate truth of fish is that the vast majority of the people in the world are no responsible. Actually thats really just the unfortunate truth of life, really.
Oscars will always be kept in 10g tanks, and goldfish will always be kept in bowls, and bettas will always be kept in cups.
All of the above will be dumped *somewhere* when they get too big, die, or become boring to their owner.
Do i hate it? Hell yes.
Can i do anything about it? Not really.

Bah.

This is such an amusing thread to read...

I just love the inconsistencies, double standards, ignorance and all around disregard for federal and state wildlife law...Nice to know how many see laws meant to protect Native ecosystems as just a road bump or inconvenience to your selfish material pleasures. Really shows you well and shows how little you get the seriousness of the issues that have enacted these laws in the first place.

Do any of you get it ????

Lets get things right here...First of all Ameca splendens are still found in the wild but are very much threatened with extinction..It was not Smallmouth bass but Largemouth bass..

These Largemouth where Bucket dumps by locals and not Government sanctioned. The US nor Mexican government had nothing to do with this.

Get your facts straight

People who choose to break the law for their own selfish reasons are a negative for true hobbiests. Unwanted attention brought on by keeping illegal fish, endangered fish, fish dumping etc. is bad for all of us. I view them as any other criminal.

Say you know a guy that has an 18" fish in a 29g tank for the past ten years. You start to do some research on the fish and discover its an illegal species. You have an empty 125g tank.
Does it make you a bad fishkeeper if you decide to give the fish a better home to live out the remainder of its life in?To see it be able to swim for the first time in years cause it has the room now? When you look at it everyday in your fishroom and know you cant post pics of the coolest fish you own?And when It died You couldnt post a thread to get some sympathy or a few "sorry Bro"

I think it depends on the situation, and your motives for getting the fish.
