what's your worst purchase

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The worst purchase I have ever made would have to be four small Bofins. I tried to do everything right, with no luck. I had them for about two weeks before they started dropping like flies. I have owned large bowfins and they are, as durable as, anything.

When I first started my tank(20yrs ago) I was told at the lfs that a Midas was a community fish. Needless to say he killed everything

getting a firemouth a friend, forgeting my keys on a school day while it is soaking outside.. like 20 degrees ouside i get to his house fish still kickin and i crash on his couch. i ran to his house water spilling out of the side of the tank.. then it turns out my jewel decides to kill and eat the fish facepalm..
and also getting 4 bettas for them all to be killed, and 5 snails (all dead now )

Not a fish but my worst purchase was a TetraTec EX2400 filter, it did a great job with the filtration but the noise it made would drown out the TV! I tried all the tricks in the trade to get it to run quietly and I even got a complete new motorhead sent by Tetra but it was just as noisy. In the end I sold it for £30 and warned the buyer it was VERY noisy!

I'm looking to buy a piranha in TEXAS. Does anyone know where i can get one?

Thanks!

Yeah, nowhere legal and I don't suggest being caught with them either.

Worst purchases: Goldfish, Convicts, bunch plants (the metal banded ones) and petco tri pack plants (2 of 3 die and its always the ugly one that lives).

I figured out pretty early that a goldfish feeder tank was stupid. They peed my betta to death in less than a week before they started peeing themselves to death. So I switched to convicts. The nearest place I found them was an hour and a half one way, mom lives nearby so it was a dual trip, so I played my odds out and got 4 for my 20 gal tank that had 5 remaning goldfish in it.

Ohhh boy, took me 3 hours to realize they were already stressing the goldfish to death the goldfish went away. Less than a week later I figured out I had 3 females, 1 male and a batch of eggs. The parent fish started beating up the two loners and ate one of their tails clean off so I devided the tank. The fish started beating themselves up on the devider. I coverd the devider and went to sleep to wake up to the other female having ick.

So I threw them both into the big fish tank where they became feeders. Wrong. Three days later doing a water change something small darts out, I scream, jerk my hand into a PIRANHA and nearly fall off the chair im standing on. Both convicts were very much alive and odd enough very healthy

Three weeks later I go visit mom again and find a nice boy fish for the gals in the big fish tank since this is working out. I spot a nice coralife light on sale but don't grab it because it was out of budget that week. I take my fish home and by the end of the week I have another happy couple with fry and there beating up the lone female. WTF fish? 120 gal of space and they have to pick on her.

Moving on. Remember that light? Well I went back and got it the next weekend. Sunday everyone was happy, Monday the lone female dissapeared, Tuesday the mated female dies... I'm starting to think the piranha couldn't find them in the dark. I can't believe I went out of my way for the male just to have the two females get eaten.

I guess the good thing is for under 20 bucks I have learned I'll never do chichlids again. Nothing like I expected.

$40 worth of EB crayfish and $60 worth of some sort of shrimp supposed to eat the leftovers. Well needless to say my Oscar made short work of that and had himself a feeding frenzy. $100 meal in less than 5 minutes lucky bugger.:irked:

When I was starting fish keeping, I bought an assortment of african cichlids and two baby oscars for my 10g. A day later one oscar was dead and the other had chunks missing. I got the half dead oscar in a baby holder and gave the africans to my sister. Years and tank upgrades later, that oscar was my favorite fish. I miss him hitting the top of the tank to tell me it's dinner time.....
