when is too much filtration, too much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^^ that's not really true. Most people on here believe in over filtration as do I but there is a point when it becomes a waste. You wouldn't put an FX5 in a 20 gallon tank. That would be overfiltration and most likely harmful to the fish living in a giant wave pool.

I would say you are over filtering when the circulation is to strong but yes you could argue that's another thing, in which case if your purely asking at what point can you stop putting bio balls, scrubbies or ceramic bricks into a sump/filter then there is no amount that is too much, or at least not too much that would harm the fish only too much that it would hurt your wallet like said at the beginning.

As you yourself said BB will only grow to the amount of load so the rest is therefore waste, you need a little bit of excess in case your load increases i would say but circulation is usually what would be the halting point if you kept adding filters to a tank

^^:banhim:^^

Im finally waking up now with a hangover and wondering why I was wondering about this when I was drunk? (its 1pm here now)
I do Like stealing extra filter media for new tanks and not worrying about it, but Im getting 3-4 axolotls later this week from jay sommers and they dont like currents so im gonna have to go for effecient filtration without lots of gph, so im thinking of using a rena filstar xp2 and a spray bar and a big sponge on the intake.
Its gonna be a planted tank as well with the spray bar perhaps spraying into a potho container and dripping back into tank. probally still major overkill but less then what Ive got going on with other tanks.
there like 2.5 inch right now and its a 40 gallon breeder tank, Jay was saying they would essentially be lost in that size tank right now and unable to find there food, so Im gonna use my ten or 20 till there a little bigger and start this planted tank ahead of time so its well established for them.
At what point do you guys think that you cant steal viable biomedia from one filter to start another tank because that tank was so overfiltered that there is too little BB growing on the media now?

water current is not an indication of too much filtration. ALSO, to the person that said " when your water is clear" that too is not an indication that your over filtered. Add a big enough filter to keep your parameters in check. Bacteria will only grow in proportion to the waste that is produced by the tank mates.

Everyone have good points. Filtration is made up of many factors.......biological, mechanical, flow rate.......

You can have a big sump with a low flow rate.
You can have clear water with a UV but params can still be out of check.
You can have murky water and params are in check.

Big enough is when you and your fish are happy.
