When you can keep your nitrate at 40ppm or less within 1 week then that is how much you need. That's it for me. K.I.S.S.

That has more to do with your tank size, how many fish you have, and how much you feed them. You can have a rise in nitrates of 40 ppm a day, and adding another filter won't help.
