when is too much filtration, too much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was speaking of ditrius floating about. If your ammonia is 0 and nitrite is 0 you are filtering enough.

No that is not what you stated, you only included "clear water" and "good parameters" in your false statement. Obviously you have no idea what you are commenting on if you think "ditrius" is a water parameter.

Ditrius effects the parameters by increasing ammonia. Overfeeding effects the parameters by increasing ammonia and clouding the water.

Detritus does more than cause ammonia. Breaking down in the water column adds sulfur, CO2 and many more acids and proteins which lower water quality and affect color, smell and clarity directly and indirectly, like contributing to algae and oxygen exchange

When you can keep your nitrate at 40ppm or less within 1 week then that is how much you need. That's it for me. K.I.S.S.

That has more to do with your tank size, how many fish you have, and how much you feed them. You can have a rise in nitrates of 40 ppm a day, and adding another filter won't help.

When your power bill is more than your house payment then you're over filtered.

Adding another filter is the best way to add BB. More beneficial bacteria can take the "load" much better in the fish tank. If your feeding and their eating it all regularily then your not going to have a 40ppm spike in a day. Are the fish taking bigger dumps or something? Lol
