when is too much filtration, too much?

Adding another filter is the best way to add BB. More beneficial bacteria can take the "load" much better in the fish tank. If your feeding and their eating it all regularily then your not going to have a 40ppm spike in a day. Are the fish taking bigger dumps or something? Lol

Lol! It was an example. Beneficial bacteria doesn't keep nitrates in check. It's a byproduct of the nitrogen cycle. Plants can help keep your nitrates low, but adding a filter won't. My rule of thumb is filtering your tank 10x a hour. So if I have a 100 gallon tank, I would get filter(s) that pump 1000g a hour.
