My local Walmart's largest aquarium is 55 gallons. Petsmart can order a 150 gallon aquarium, but they say it costs $500 for the aquarium alone. My local fish stores want close to 1k for a 150 and also have to order it. Petsmart has a 120 for $330, which is about what I'd like to pay for a 150. Is that unreasonable? Is there anywhere else I could be shopping? Maybe online?

Mine was a custom build by someone local. Found him through LFS

All of the above. The LFS's around here sell tanks without lids/lights and while the companies warranty them it's not as easy as taking it back to PetsMart and being able to get a replacement that day (I had a 120 g fail after 3 wks once). If I'm getting anywhere from a 55-150 g I go to PetsMart. By the time you pay for lids/lights at the LFS it's the same cost as having it all included at PetsMart.

There are some good deals on Craigslist. You just have to check it pretty regularly, they go fast. Brothers Pets sometimes has some used ones, but can be a little more expensive. Paradise Aquatics takes tradein and sometimes have used. I think if you ask and leave your info, they will let you know when one comes in. Petland in Olathe can order pretty reasonable sometimea also. The store in the mall of the great plains gets used and can order and I think they will price match/beat competitor prices. Hope that helps

 Guess it really depends on how deep your pockets are. Some try the used market others try DIY. There are a few discount retailers that offer some pretty good bargains but if you absolutely, positively have to have it your way .... TENECORE http://www.tenecor.com/ . (Caution, interactive site is sometimes a PIA) "T"

I got my 150 Aqueon (all-glass) tank for 340 brand new from my LFS. And it was special ordered, not one that had been sitting around forever. Sometimes there are good deals to be had.
