Where to get cheap discus online?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
to be honest, i think the whole thing about discus being frail and likely to die without RO etc. etc. is overrated
if you start with good healthy stock they will be just as good as angels and what not. just be on top of your water changes and keep things clean.

with regards to feeding them, make your own beefheart mix, get them on pellets, don't let them live off frozen bloodworms. i have 15 discus (2 wilds) and everyone eats pellets with the exception of 2. tetra color bits, flake foods, everything they will eat it. you just have to force them to. i initially started out spending a lot of money on foods, and now i don't since they pretty much eat everything i put into the tank.

as for cheap discus online, you really get what you pay for. do you want to spend $100 on 10 cheap and iffy quality discus, or do you want to pay $200 for 6 really nice ones that are healthy, bright eyed and ready to go.
it's about quality, not quanity.

Your exaggerated, my dad kept 2 breeding pair, roughly 5" each in a planted 55G tank, and daily water change. He only pay $30 for a month on Hikari blood worms and the discus are getting 3 meals a day and very healthy

I agree maintance can be hand full, but $20-40 on food per week, thats a little too much

I have a daughter that's 12 years old and she has a group of 6 discus in a 100 Gallon tank. She doesn't spend $20-40 a week for food and maintenance. All of her discus eat dried food and she changes her water every 2 weeks. I doubt it costs her that much a month to keep her discus healthy. If she spent that much, I can guarantee you , she wouldn't have discus. The Doctor.

I wouldn't buy cheap discus personally. Even a cheap discus will run you $30+ and you might lose it if the quality isnt there. Id rather dish out more money and have a healthy good looking fish than spend less and get less. Honestly though, at 14 you're looking at a large investment to keep these fish as far as getting started goes and their upkeep isn't cheap either, although it is not $20 - 40 a week unless you're doing something really special for them. You are also going to have to be prepared to take really good care of them or no matter what you spend it will be a losing proposition.

In order to keep discus properly shaped and not stunted, which I guarantee Dr's are. $20-40 is on the light side for maintenance and food. Consider that for 6 discus 1# of live black worms will last ~1.5 weeks at $25 a lb. for low cost black worms. Then add the cost of blood worms, and beefheart, as well as flakes, and then the cost of water to be doing the proper water changes, which at a minimum should be 1 50% water change every other day at a minimum with those feeding requirements. Then all the chemicals. I don't even include the costs of RO, as it isn't 100% necessary for them, unless they are WC.

Ro isn't necessary for discus any more, except for the wc.

See my above post regarding foods.

For those that question costs associated with this fish... consider these fish take a lot to keep them happy. Many of you preach on to many others about properly housing and caring for _____ fish, for example arowana, this is no different. Just because they are alive, and swimming in your tank, does not mean they are healthy and growing well.

I don't need anything but prime for my water...........no RO......my tap water comes out at 7.5 and lowers to 7.2 overnight (not enough of a swing to worry about so I pour it straight in) I have 11 discus in a 125 and I spend $11.95 every 2 weeks for live California Black Worms, A can of Tetrabits will last months for $6, and a few flats of frozen blood worms every couple of months is more like $25 a month............Clean water and a good variety of good food and Discus Thrive! ........

please only get adults if you are only going to do 2.............you will spend lots of money on meds and other stuff trying to keep them healthy if you buy juvies...........like everything else in life you get what you pay for! Discus are a schooling fish and you really should do 5 or more. And yes, I'm sure some folks have 2 in a small tank that they spend very little money on and don't do nearly enough water changes..........and yes they could be happy..............but.........there are many many keepers out there with years of experience that will tell you to go with a minimum of 55 gallons and 5-8 juvies.........bare bottom helps too. Discus are fun, beautiful, and not too hard, have fun, read alot and enjoy!!

I agree with this part.
I got 4 juvies in a 130l tank (until I move out at the end of the year and make a bigger tank to them).
they really calm me down when I'm stressed, tired from work.
i can easily spent a couple of hours just watching them.
and when a bigger tank comes, i'll try to get 2 more discus.
just remember, do water changes (at least 1 per week), don't keep plecos with them (they do a LOT of dirt), and Have fun with them

I easily spend $100 dollars every 1.5 weeks and that is a conservative estimate. I haven't even factored in opportunity costs LOL

Man I'm 15 and I breed Discus and Angelfish. Go for it and buy a pair. I have invested hundreds for Discus and it has worked out for me. But also I have tons of tanks and a I have RO. Age doesn't mean anything bro. People who come to my house and buy from me ask for the person who has the Discus and I say it's me and they totally freak. People under estimate us teens.
