with a noise sensitive spouse, you might want to consider keeping your canister enclosed in a cabinet. mine is underneath my tank, in an enclosed stand. i think it might make a difference when compared to having the canister just sitting on the floor, out in the open. i really think that nowadays, with technology being as it is, manufacturers of canister filters understand that we want quiet filter units and they are attempting to accomodate the consumer. i'm not sure it makes a BIG difference in which manufacturer you go with. i feel that once you buy a premium canister filter, you're going to have a quiet unit.

I don't have much experience with canister filters but I have a cascade 700 and can't hear it all. When I first set it up my boyfriend even questioned me if it was working.

My canisters must suck because I can easily hear them even though they are in a wooden stand.

But for $85 each I'm not going to complain too much.

I have 2 Eheim 2217's and they're extremely quiet, but that doesn't mean much because any kind of background noise less than 50-60 db would be drowned out by my LOUD Iwaki pump.

I have two Rena XP3's on my 150g under the stand and I can hear the air pump that I use for the tank over the two filters.

my whisper air pump in the other room is twice sounds like a train compared to my fx5, not saying a lot for whisper air pumps, but i know my fx5 is in my bedroom and i can't hear it at night at all, it is in a stand though.

Yup and if not put sheet insulation on the inside of the cabinet ;)
