Which canister filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would go with the Fluval 405, they have a flow and you can buy them online for $100. Aquatop/sunsun are another option. The plastic parts on both leave something to be desired however.

The CFS500 and aquatop 500 both appear to be too big to fit through the cabinet based on the specs i am finding online. That leaves me with a few good suggestions: Eheim 2217, Fluval 405 and the Magnum 350.

For the Magnum, I do like the idea of it being clear and seeing how close you are to needing to clean it. It is also the cheapest of this group..about half the price of the Eheim on some sites. Is the Eheim twice as good to warrant the extra cost?

Also, this is to fill a secondary mechanical filtration need (water polishing,) not bio as the sump is handling the nitrates fine.

The Eheim is rated for slightly larger tank. Up to 159g I think vs. the Marineland at 100. I personally haven't used the Eheim, but I'll stand by my Magnums any day. I have absolutely abused the crap out of them and they just won't quit. You can get creative with media also if you like. You can use just the water polishing insert, or you can stuff it with whatever. Seals and o-rings are cheap to replace also. For reference, two of my Marinelands are the original versions released years ago and I've only replaced o-rings. They've been running 24/7 for as long as I can remember. :)

I have been looking so hard for a canister that would fit through the doors of my stand that i forgot about rating...That would point me back to the Xp4 or eheim...but then, that rating is probably assuming the canister will be by itself with no help from a sump...

Can u take the doors off the hinges? +1 on fx5

Go S. Vettel #1 rb8

I can, but that wouldnt help. The hinge is spaced pretty far from the opening so the doors are larger than the hole and completely cover it. My max clearence is 10" by 20".

if i have a diameter over 10" on the canister i just can't fit it through the hole. I might be able to slide a retangular canister through so i think the XP4 will fit....although, it would really piss me off to order it and find that i cant get it through the tight opening.

Ditch the xp4 and get 2 magnums especially if you are looking for water polishing. I have two with a sump and cfs700 on my 220 and its perfect clear with my stocklist in my sig.

I could get two magnum 350s for the price of one xp4....maybe that is the way to go.

Magnum 350 are horrible filters. Never buy one. Trust me.
