Which dslr to get...

I just got an olympus E-420 which seems really good to me, it's my first dslr which was upgraded from a point and shoot and I really enjoy it. It was only 370 at walmart. Look it up, Its supposed to compete with other companies entry level cameras, and It got pretty good reviews.

if you go the nikon route, i'd get a used D40 (usually i see them for $300-350) and put the rest of the money towards a speedlight like the SB-600. the speedlight is a MUST for aquarium photography.

but i suggest you thoroughly explore the features and limitations of each model and think about where you'll be down the road. photography is very addictive and you may soon wish you would have been just a couple hundred more now instead of double the costs later, as i quicky found out after purchasing my D40

same basic concept, but on a much more limited level. my P&S also had a manual mode, but the aperture settings are very limited. ive tried messing with manual focus but i just dont like it. it seems sharp in my viewfinder but when i open the pic full size its a little blurry. i find the D90s AF system to be fast and accurate so i let the camera do its thing.

i'm also a nikon fanboy i personally dont like the look and feel of canon cameras. they feel cheaply made, even though that doesnt speak to their capabilities. unless your going with $5k extreme-pro cameras, you wont notice a difference between canon or nikon

Okay, thanks for the info. I think I am going to get the D3000, now I just have to save up the money to buy it.

Update: After just a few days of saving $, I already have 1/4 of the $ to pay for the camera, so I should probably be able to get it before this month is over.

Yep, and actually I went to the store today and played with both cams a little (for the fourth time). I really have no preferrence of the external features between the XS and the D3000, the major thing that has swayed me more toward the D3000 is the newbie-friendly display and the "Guide" feature (which I may never actually use, but still, it's a nice thing to have if I ever need help choosing settings for a picture or something).
