spell check much?

I am just relaying what every fish information site says. They all say 16" in captivity if lucky. And by captivity they mean fish tank, not a national aquarium size tank.

I have a jag, and I read up before I bought him, and everything told me 16". No, I wouldn't put a full grown Jag in a 55" if they are 16". Mine was stunted, and isn't getting larger, so a 55 is more than enough, but I was stating that to think he won't upgrade is absurd. Give him a chance to prove himself before you shoot off saying these are all horrible choices.

If I buy a 2" Jag, I am not going to put him in a 300 gallon alone when he will be fine in a 55 for a bit of time.

Why is your jag stunted? The OP asked a specific question about a stated tank size. Seems idiotic to assume the OP would want anything other. This is how bad advice is spewed. I'm just surprised some moron hasn't suggested either an arowana or red tailed cat yet :duh:

i would be comfortable keeping a green terror or a jack dempsey in a 55g.

a jag should be in a 125 (IMO)

oscar/flowerhorn, 75g

this is all of course just personal opinion

figured it would start a fight if I mentioned that whole "too big for a 55G" argument . . . the reason I suggested EBJD - - and not JD - - is that most EBJDs don't get as big as standard JDs, and even if it topped out at 8-9", then that would be okay for a 55G

some of those other fish, like GTs, Jags and Flowerhorns, can easily grow to 12+", and in a 55G, which is only 12" wide, that is too much fish, in my opinion . . . sure, it can be done, I just would not recommend it, and the OP was asking for recommendations

and rather than assume he would upgrade - - not always possible - - I figured I'd just give advice based on the actual question: a focal fish for a 55G

hopefully he got some good ideas out of all of this :D

I'm trying to decide on just one fish for a 55G, freshwater. Would like one that is aggressive and fun to feed but also nice to look at. Any suggestions?

Beasts:
The "Golden Tropheops" (Pseudotropheus tropheops; Regan, 1921) is one you might want to research on the internet. From information I have, they get up to 8". Their food: Omnivorous. Live, flake, frozen & green food. Temp range: 75 - 79 deg. F; pH: 8.0 to 8.5; dH: to 20 deg.

This fish is aggressive not only to it's own kind, but to every other fish as well. Males claim territories. Keep several females with each male. The male is larger, more colorful and has egg spots on the anal fin. There are many forms of color morphs with this fish.

Breeding: A typical mouthbrooder, the females produce about 40 eggs. The fry are guarded for just a short time after release.

Tank Set-up: Rocky Malawi setup plus a few plants so that the fish can claim their territories.

I will continue to search for others for you, but in the meantime, it might help to search your public library for books on the types of fish that might interest you. I do all the time. I have to borrow the books from other libraries from out of state, but they do help. I have made my selection on the fish I want, but it may be a while before I set up my tank. Doing research on biotopes right now. I will be hopefully getting some books on biotopes by the end of this week.

Have really enjoyed your thread. I have learned quite a lot. Good luck with your search. If you have more concerns or questions for me, send me a PM. I hope this info has been of some help.

get a dwarf pike cichlid, Crenicichla Compressiceps. they can live there life comfortably in a 55 are active and a little aggresive. not nearly as bad as a normal pike cichlid but still an awesome fish. or as stated earlyer a red wolf fish would be nice.

Green Terrors generally do not grow bigger than 10" , FWIW at this point.

you might be right about that . . . mine topped out at around 8", living in a 90G tank

still, a Blue Acara would be a safer bet in a 55G . . .

You could have one salvini or a pair. The males reach about 8", and females reach about 6". I keep a pair in a 55 and they are aggressive towards other fishes. Unlike most of the fish in this thread, they won't outgrow a 55.

get a pair of pike topminnows they are agressive and look like real pikes

with a 55 gallon, you could go with a few hondouran redpoints those are nice fish to keep. you could also go with tanganyikan cichlids, they are alot of fun, i personally LOVE calvus compressiceps. depending on how much mainteince you wanted to keep up with you could plant it and do some discus. lots of options out there. African peacocks?

Edit: sorry had to re-read post, just one fish? Ide get a super red texas
