Have you made a decission on what you plan on stocking your 55 gal. with or have you opted out for doing more research on your own? Enquiring mind want to know!

How about a group of firemouths? Very under appreciated cichlid, cheap and won't get too big. IMO, many of the cheap fish are cheap because they are commercially bred, and they are commercially bred because they sell well, and they sell well usually because they look nice. :D

edit: a group of firemouths doesn't work for a focal fish. but i still like them :P

I've seen oscars outgrow 55 gallon tanks. My neighbor had ones the size of dinner plates.

I've never seen a jag get past 10", but I know they are supposed to.
I had one that hit 17", not a good choice for a 55g.

Also what does focal mean?
A tank with just firemouths would look really good.

The term FOCAL, in the sense to which itis being used in the OP's situation, is a type of fish which is the main center of attention in the OP's aquarium. Regardless where his fish is located in the aquarium, your attention will be drawn to or directly focused on that one particular fish above all else.

I hope this helps explain your question so you may understand the OP's question better.

It also helps to use a dictionary once in a while too, for the meaning of words.

it's been mostly on-point, but it's key to remember what the OP actually wants:

a) a single fish that would be the focal point for his tank

b) for a 55G tank - - 48x13x20 - - so, "monster" fish that belong in 75G tanks and up should not be recommended

most of the arguing has been about whether such-and-such fish should be in a 55G, and it's a worthwhile debate . . . the OP probably is well served to know at least which fish are considered too big . . . if he wanted to go for a Flowerhorn or Jaguar, it might change his mind to know that many people on this site would recommend against them

you ask for suggestions, you're gonna get suggestions . . . some good, some bad, and some in between . . .

Sorry, actually I'm not.
Maybe it would of been better to say "I want a suggestion for a fish that will be the focal point of the tank", but either way I can see I should of noticed what he meant, guess it was a blonde moment or maybe I'm an idiot like you are so graciously trying to hint at.
I was thinking he was using it as an abbreviation, something along the lines of abbreviations such as "fowler", which people usually capitalize. With the asinine posts of fish suggestions that I wouldn't put with any other fish I was thinking that it might mean something along the lines of a single fish.
Thanks though, I hope your post made you feel smarter then me;)
By the way, decision has one s. Use a dictionary!
