Which gar should I get?

I just started gathering parts so there isn't anything to take pics of yet lol. I'm building a DIY filter with it too. I'll put up some pics once it's underway. Whats the max size on a spotted gar?And preferable temp?

nice DIY filters work the best if you do them right. max size ive seen was 45'' ive yet to see one bigger. as far as temp the higher it is the faster they grow lower the slower they grow i keep mine at 79F-80F seems to do well for me.

45" for a spotted gar? from what locality? that would essentially be a record length spotted gar, so doubtful the species ID is correct.

What makes you so sure it isn't a spotted gar? A vendor from this site says he has spotted gar. I can give you a link if you dont believe me.

it will be a Florida gar - 99.9% of vendors can't properly ID a spotted gar from a Florida, and Floridas are what you will see in the hobby.--

You're getting a Florida gar rather than a spotted gar. And please don't try to go out and catch one in PA...

florida gar is often called the spotted gar atleast around here. (canada) and its odd you say please dont try and catch one ? he never suggested anything like that lol.

I've met some case where people say they caught a 4' spotted gar! turn out they don't know what's the different between a long nose and a spotted!

if my memory is correct the spotted gar belongs to arapaimag here on the site. because last time i was over there he was explaining the difference between the two and had said that his spotted was roughly 45'' long wether that was his own guess or the fishes true size but his FLG where younger and possibly bigger. key words being (biggest one ive ever seen).

This kind of applies to both you and the OP in that the governments of your respective areas are pretty touchy about the possession of true spotted gars due to the fact that they're regulated in both areas and can't be legally captured from the local bodies of water. One has to be sure to contact the proper people before obtaining one in order to make sure it's legal.

im 100% sure you cant catch them outta any of the great lakes in ont canada. i may be wrong because there are a few stupid people out there. and i dont think spotted gars are illegal in ont. (all true gars are legal) dont qoute me on that tho.

From what I've read it comes down to a spotted gar having bony plates btwn their gills in a location called the isthmus and a Florida not having them. Seems straight forward to me, but then again I've never had to ID them myself

I live in PA and based on my research all true gars are legal here
