the aro is fast enough to get away from the rtc but the gar is not. I can say that the rtc only come to the surface when he sees me but I don't know if putting the gar in is a good idea!

The surface doesn't mean a thing. Gars spend a lot of time resting on the bottom of the tank.

i'd have thought the appropriate question would be "can my 450 hold a gator gar for a good period of time". a good period of up to 2 years? should be fine. for life? no way. to answer your initial question anyways, yes they will be fine (although it is an inadvisable combo, i'm guessing you mean predation wise) for a while. but a 2' gator will start shredding them in due time. outright predation when the gator is 3-5feet is not out of the question either, even if the bass/aro is 2'

Ya I can understand that the Gator Gar is at another level of aggression vs all the other gars. As for the 450g it will not be for life. I am moving into a house in the next few years and building a indoor pond with glass front view. But I dunno if I want to deal with a 5' aggressive eating machine especially with teeth. Though RTC's may try and eat other fish but they are actually quite friendly once you tame them. Also at least it doesn't have crazy sharp teeth and won't try and bite my hand off comparing to a fully mature Gator Gar. Hence I still want a Gar and I might try and get my hands on a less aggressive smaller Gar etc Florida. Even though from advice they are not compatible but then again alot of other fish combos aren't and some ppl have pulled it off so IMO it's a risk to take and I am willing to take those chances. Anyhow thanks for the advice.

I keep my alligator gar (36") in with 3 redtails 36" to 44". No problems yet.

I added a 34 1/2" longnose gar on Feb 7th and no problems yet either.

add 100gallons to his tank and yours is still 100 times larger;) meaning much much more diffusion of aggresion

I have a 14 inch RTC with fish ranging from 4 inches! They are carnivores when not fed right! My rtc has also never eaten a feeder! and wont even if its a tiny goldy he is a nice giant! I also have a 18 inch florida gar with him they are like best friends! I believe rtc and gar look great together!
i have a 10" lima shovelnose and a 13" tsn/rtc in with my 12" florida gar and its the same story. "best friends" but i do belive this will not last more than another 1-2 yrs max.
