i live in central indiana and hav a 12x5x3ft deep pond, I am stocking it with natives, such as bowfin, gars, bass, and bullheads. It is 1350gal, my question what gars would you recommend i put in, spotted, longnose, or shortnose? live food is easily available in the form of baitfish or any size bluegill, crappie, and bass.

What fish are already in there?

I'd definitely put a gator in there. It may or may not out grow it, but it would still be my first choice.

that sounds like a pretty intensive stock list. may work for a few seasons but depending on the amount of fish and what types you put in there you can easily overstock.. funny as that sounds. for a community set-up you can't beat floridas imo. if you want 1 big fish a gator may be happy in your pond. not sure where bowfins would play out from what i've heard reguarding these fish. I would stick with sunfish/crappie/ect and avoid the bullheads tbh. they can and will quickly out-breed and eat anything else until you have a billion cats, otherwise toss in 1 and it will control most if not all attempts of anything else to breed.

okay, I'm making it even bigger and this is my question, it is going to be either 12x6x3 at 1650 gallons or 12x7x3 at 1850 gallons. If I get an alligator it will be the only fish with maybe a school of bluegill or 1 bullhead to clean up the scraps of food. So how cold can the water get for an alligator gar? It can get pretty cold in central indy

Lows 20's is the coldest I'd let it go. That's celcius.
