First of all, I've had bad luck with birds. My first one, a cockatiel. Great bird, I was upstairs and it get scared and jumped off. Cat was nearby and got it. Good thing my mom was nearby(her cats, but she liked the bird) because I probably would have thrown it off the deck.(I dont like most cats)(His name was Cheeko)

Second Bird was a sun conure, loved it most of the time(was soooooooo loud). Well I was giving it its weekly bath in the bathtub with very little water in it and something made me leave for like two min. Well Cheech got his beak stuck in the metal grate and drowned.

I vowed I wouldnt try to do birds again untill now, im really missing having one.

Heres what I want to have in a bird:
Smart
Quieter than a sun conure
Nice
Funny

It doesnt matter the kind, Im currently looking into bigger types.

What kinds do you think fit that criteria?

Im also looking into adopting one. I always used to see cuckatoos and other types of parrots in the free trader(when I used to read it), so I put a wanted ad in the paper. If the bird seems nice and in good health, Is there any bad side effects to adopting a bird?

Hi,sorry for your losses,it happened to me to,remember its mind over matter, keep trying with your favorite birds without exageration.

birds are loud, its hit or miss with that though some species tend to be quieter than others. Cockateils, Quakers, & Parakeets, are all very sociable, on the smaller side, less demanding than larger parrots, and are a safer bet if looking for a quieter bird.

Adopting a bird is great, someone can attest to their personality, and your giving a bird a home that needs it, and it will be less exspensive. If your looking for quiet do not get a cookatoo they tend to be screamers.

All birds require lots of attention and house proofing, larger parrots are comparable to toddlers - small children so unless you can dedicate the time, they are not a responsible decision.

dont adopt unless you have experiance with the bird. your likely adopting someone elses problems and mistakes. you will then have to be able to fix these mistakes and it can take alot of hard work and training. are you ready for that? adopting a bird is great, but sometimes a unexperianced bird keeper will just make that bird worse for the next person to deal with it in a few months. but i think adopting is great if you are able!

as for the bird see what is avalible too you and then get what you like and can afford. my choice is a military macaw or a amazon. these guys do require alot but they can be alot more like a dog then a tiel or a sun conure.

as for being noisy, i know sun conures that are the almost silent and then i know tiels that are the devil. it really is hit or miss, but a good bird keeper knows what to do to train his bird to be a good bird.

ill share my bird horror story. so my sister decided to bring home a bird (this was a couple years ago) it was an awsome cockateil super friendly, took a liking to my mom. one day she steped on it by accident when he got out of his cage and it pretty much never recovered and died. she was heart broken and still has a feather that she keeps in her room. no more birds for our family

i have 2 parrots currently, a sun conure and a cockatoo, my cockatoo was more of a save then an adopt. he had plucked feather syndrome, hes currently doing great. if you looking for a smart bird go with a cockatoo. one thing to keepin mind is all birds are loud. the cockatoo's screach is louder then the sun conures but the sun conure likes to yell for ever.

I was looking at a severe macaw, a mini macaw

I almost adopted a grey. The process of meeting the criteria to adopt is extensive, including home vists, proper set ups bought before hand and home checks after the bird is adopted. The questions that they ask are nuts too, liking you having to promise to not touch them purposly in a inappropriate/ comprimising matter :screwy: . Birds with special needs would not be available to you unless you could prove that you were experienced and could handle it. They in no way try to unload birds on people.

There are many perfectly adoptable birds that need homes too, people buy them and just have no clue what they were getting into, or theres divorces, moves, ect.

Of course if you were capable and wanting to adopt a special needs bird all the more power to you, the more you put into any bird the more you get out.

They are intelligent, loving, and loyal to their families but they are not a dog you have to earn it to get it return.

A goose.
Seriously. They make intelligent, awesome pets if you handraise them from babies. They can be EXTREMELY loving too. I'm planning on getting on sometime in the future.
Plus you don't have to worry about cats or drowning with one.
They even make diapers for them, that he geese never seem to be bothered by, so it can literally just live with you, like a dog.

just remember if your kinda new to bird keeping start small and easy don't rush out and get in over your head with a macaw, they need alot more attention and a lot more care. they are wounderfull birds if you can handle them. my fav is african greys.
