Yes and no. Commonly, yes, but you can find specimens of each species with a lot more green than usual.

 Damb, then how the hell can I tell if the Bichir is infact a Poly Palmas Palmas??

 I know it seems difficult at first. At the begining of '07' I couldn't tell a lap from an endli, or a palmas anything from a palmas anything else.

I only knew ornatipinnis, senegalus, and delhezi. Then as the collection and passion grew (and I started picking up the less common species) I was able to ID them. Now I can ID them as well as Infblue I'd say :D

With palmas complex, polli have yellow spots towards the back end. Beuttikoferi have thing black stripes between yellow ones, and palmas has thicker black and yellow stripes.

So the Palmas Palmas poly has more green than the other 2 right?
this will depend on the individuals to an extent, but to genearlize to species level, or subspecies level in this case:

palmas polli - typically has the most green, especially on the head and pectoral fins. sometimes the other fins can also be green. the other color that is common is yellowish fins, but these individuals usually won't have much green.

palmas buettikoferi - typically yellowish fins. the belly is whitish to light yellowish. the base color of the sides and top of the body light yellowish to kinda grayish

palmas palmas - all the ones i have have either subtle or obvious greenish pectoral fins (not on the other fins though). the head can have subtle greenish color on some individuals. again belly is whitish to light yellowish. base color of the sides and toward the top yellowish.

don't rely on just the color. also some of those colors mentioned may not be obvious in a very small juvenile.

as said already, palmas polli can be easily distinguished from the other two. more pointed head, 5-7 dorsal finlets.

the other two have basically identical body shape and both have 7-9 dorsal finlets. use the side and dorsal patterns to tell the two apart. i'm sure you can see the pattern differences from the pics posted already, and in the link i posted previously.

forgot to say, some individuals have a dark color, like the 2nd pic in this link, and with those, you wouldn't see much yellow.

West, are you really confused yet?:ROFL:If in doubt then pay for the shipping expense and buy from Rehoboth. He'll send you the right fish without going thru fish store misidentifying their fish. Keep in mind that palmas palmas and buettikoferi are not that active. The only active specy is the polli palmas.

LOL thats why color isn't a good way to ID them, especially when trying to visualize it from word description :D

but i honestly think its clear what the differences are looking at the pics. if you're still having trouble, like fishgonewild said, order from rehoboth and pay the shipping. you'll get the right fish.

in fact i'd do that anyway, since LFS typically only has palmas polli. Besides they might not even know there are three palmas subspecies, and a generic 'palmas' bichir may not even be any palmas at all. And if you tell them to order palmas buettikoferi or palmas palmas from their sources, chances are you won't get the right fish, unless their source is rehoboth.

Hello,

for my opinion Polypterus teugelsi has the most unique coloration - also beautiful contrasts from the black and yellow patterns ... the head has a red/brownish coloration, so Teugelsi has more colours than any other bichir.

The pic isn't as good but shows the coloration of the whole body. Not so easy because my Teugelsi is 19,5 inches long ...

hi everybody! I just purchase a poly palmas the other day but by looking at those pics It makes me wonder how it will look like someday!

Nice teugelsi uwe.

I think a lot of it depends on the health and individual Poly. I've seen some ornates that don't really look that great and dels that look amazing. Some of those palmas with the real vivid greens are tough to beat though.
