i'm looking at getting my first ugly stick soon:headbang2 i'm thinking i want to do some catfishing, but i also would like a nice heavy duty rod for all around larger fish(larger bass, stripers, cats, carp etc) that i can use for live and prepared baits(what i've been using 98% of the time) but also for maybe casting some lures. i looked at (4) rods, spinning rods since they're two piece.
#1 is 8'6" long med action
#2 is 7' med-heavy
#3 is 6'6" med
#4 is 7' med-light

i'm really leaning towards #1 because i like the length for casting and such but i don't know how well it'd stand up to cats in the range i'd like to start hunting for (20lbs+ btw, my biggest was a 12lb channel caught on a crappy 6' med spinning rod) which makes me think more of the 7' med-heavy but i still would like to enjoy the flexibility of a longer rod. opinions for good spinning reels would be nice as well, i want a well balanced rod but for the 8'6" rod it feels like a high-capacity reel like i want would likely weigh too much.

Looks like you need more then one rod. For the bass and even up to decent strippers cats up to and over 20 lbs, I'd go with #4. For heavy duty cat I'd go with #2. #1 would be great if you are fishing alot of open area with room to cast. Good reels are shimano, penn saltwater series, some diawa, and fleuger. Get a saltwater reel. you'll be glad you did if you get the chance to use it.

gonna have to get more than 1 pole me thinks.

try looking into saltwater rods for the catfish. I have found that anything over 7' is too long and cumbersome when fishing in rivers etc., but if your going to be doing any surf fishing with the rod 8' might not be that bad.

well, i'll be fishing the sacramento river, plenty of room. lately i've been having fun using a 7' light action rod(very sensitive and light). most of the places around here i'd have no problem using #1. i'm likely going to get one for christmas, so i was thinking i'd get one of the others afterwards. think 17lb braided line would work well?

I have a 5 1/2ft rod similar to an Ugly Stick but i like it because its REALLY light. Called a Zebco Gatorback...try it out

fireline is nice for the translucent affect and personally i would buy two rods for two different circumsatnces.

i'm planning on two rods, currently in my trunk i've got 4 rods, one is a 7' light action(very light and sensitive, perfect for panfish & trout) a 6' medium action shakesphere mantis, a 6'6" medium-heavy action zebco(rather light rod) and a 6'6" heavy action master-spectra, but one of the guides is missing. except for the 7' pole, all the others aren't in very good condition so i'm working on replacing them. i'll have to look into that gatorback rod, since most of the fish i catch are on the smaller side, i like light rods. how tough is fireline? i'm looking for a abrasion resistant line with a small diameter, the water here is fairly murky but i still like being able to have a lot of line just encase i hook something big that i have to let run. all i've used is just cheap mono lines which worked fine in the streams and canals where i used to fish, but here i keep finding my line is getting all kinds of abrasions and cuts in it so i have to respool my reels after a couple trips.

I love Shakespeare ugly stick rods . Even the small one holds great for good size peacock bass.

I imagine I am only person here with a ugly stick rod that is 2 pieces one slips into the other its 7 feet light and holds great.
