It can be harder than most assume when it comes to sexing bettas in some cases. :nilly:
The white pore should be a really reliable way to sex a betta, and used to be, but most folks have come to the realization that really young males and oddball males can have them as well. :irked:
I like to sex them by overall body shape, looking for particular characteristics or using simple tricks. Many times holding a prospective female in front of a light and trying to look through will reveal a light-colored trapezoidal shape inside her body cavity. This would be where the eggs are stored and would confirm female. It might not work on dark, solid colored bettas though. Unless stressed. ;)
Other times a ripe female will bar up with vertical bars but this method of sexing is useless in very light-colored bettas and you can usually tell whether or not you've got a female before she bars up.
Other good sexing cues are the larger beards (gill flaps) on flaring males and big bubblenests. Some females flare and even blow bubblenests but these are not nearly as large or impressive as those on males.
When it comes to plakats the ventral fins of a male should be longer than those on females and the unpaired fins of a male should still be of good length and come to slightly longer points on the dorsal and anal. Female's fins (especially the dorsal and anal) are normally tightly squared off. :)

So looking at the shape alone what do you think this one is?Great info you have given and i thank you for taking the time out to pass this on.

i have had a few female bettas. . . i would think that yours is a male plakat because the fins, although short, seem larger in proportion to the body than what a female would have.

It's a nice betta . . . but don't rule out the possibility of it being male just yet. It can very likely be a plakat male. And females always have the white egg spot sticking out, I have never had a female that didn't have it and I've bred bettas for a very long time. (Well, from age 10-16 at least, lol). If you don't know what a plakat male looks like (or more commonly, round/short-tail betta), here are a few:

And you should be able to find more on the web. But Get a side shot of it, not an angled one. Then I could probably tell for sure.

yep agreed i had one sold to me as a female which turned out to be a male plakat...was like the one in the 3rd pic here..see if i can find his pic..
