Anyone out there that knows what this actually is?

This is the second time the water in my tank just suddenly "coagulates" into white thread like slime/cobweb stuff.. (see pics) and then of course it attaches itself to everything in the tank.. even some fish!

I have absolutely no clue what is going on. it has only happened twice in the year the tank has been running and both times has been when adding water.. this time it was only one bucket (with dechlorinator/water conditioner) but I have to say that I have done this in this way a 1000 times before with same dechlorinator, same bucket etc.

Could it be that the water I put in is colder than the tank and it somehow coagulates some particles in the water? yeah I know it sounds strange but I cannot think of anything else.

Finally I will say it seems completely harmless.. and it sort of breaks down/ disolves again over half a day or so.. so no big worries just wondering what it is..

Thanks!

lmao, well, thanks for the bump. this thread is hella old but it came up when i searched it. just hoping someone chimes in with answers. mfk didn't even come up when doing a google search on it

I dunno. I get slime buildup on my glass canopy...if I wipe it and it drips into the tank it looks a LOT like that...

Thats all I got. Also looks quite a bit like a certain substance related to the male anatomy.......

You already know what to do here;

Black sand, Saltwater, Octopus.
You can call it a waterspider and fool your friends.

Its the ghost of water-changes past...

Maybe a protein build up? Not sure. If you had snails or something I might say it could be the water change pushing the snails into breeding.

there is a single snail in this tank, it was in my piranha tank for 6 months and i never had anything similar happen. the only difference is my tank has an airstone, the other tank doesn't

I'm no expert on snails, just an idea. I dunno.
