White "Cob web like" substance?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BUMP, as I am curious as to what this is and what's causing it :)

I agree.. the white "smoke" definitely forms on the surface of this one piece of wood... does not form anywhere else in the tank.

and just to keep us honest here there is the possibility that
the wood is acting as the catalyst and is not the source of the 'smoke'

If it's only coming off of the driftwood maybe there's some kind of slime fungus laying dormant in there. I know there's a few kinds of underwater molds, but I don't know much about them.

When I had this problem there was no drift wood present. It would gather on fake plants and ornaments as well. We need an aquaria Sherlock Holmes for this case!

Aww man, you're supposed to love your fish, not LOVE your fish! Just make sure you don't get any in the hair (algae).

Bumpin' up. I'm curious too. :grinno:

My best guess would just be a chemical reaction of some sort. Kindof like taking a beaker of bleach and one of ammonia, and putting them next to each other under a bucket. When the fumes from each mix, a white powder forms and covers everything (ammonium chlorate if I remember right). Lots of different products out there. Nobody really tests their own stuff for compatability with the competition or every possible thing that might be placed in a tank.

I would suggest collecting a bit of the stuff and place it in a smaller tank or some sort of bottle and see if you can make it grow.

The question is if it's an organism or if it's some sort of coagulating substance.

If it grows, then you have a problem. I would suggest attacking it with some salt. Salt usually kills slimy substances. Try that route and see if it works. Let us know.

If it doesn't grow and seems like a coagulating substance I would suggest buying distilled water or use water from an alternative source to test it out. It's possible there's some sort of contamination with your current water source every few months.

in my case the driftwood had been in my tanks for a year and a half now and i'd never noticed it. now the driftwood is in the friend's tank that has the mysterious film. The film also doesn't just hover above the driftwood, it's covering everything in the tank.

I also say it's a slime mold. Likely, the bacterial film is normally transparent and dispersed throughout your decor and substrate. When it is shocked, it clumps together until it adjusts to the change. Sort of like when you poke a sea anemone and it retracts for awhile.

I guess this simply because it looks a heck of a lot like the blue-green algae I get once in awhile (also a bacterial slime). The next time it's "gone", try shining a black light on your tank. You might see layers of green ribbon hanging invisibly in the current. Also, watch all the leaves and mobile objects in the tank and look for mysteriously strong movement that couldn't be caused by the available current but would have to come from a cumulative effort of, say, a long trail of slime being pulled on.
