I use to hate chillin with my family when i was teen. Always wanted to be with my friends in case i missed out on some fun. But now that i'm a wee bit older I love chillin with them. Friday I got out on the piss, saturday recover and sunday is family day! I guess the older you get, you realise that family is important. Some people are fortunate enough to realise that at an early age where as some are unlucky enough to never realise it.

I had the same problem in highschool as you and got the threat of being booted out of the house quite a few times till I left for awhile on my own accord, untill things cooled down... I still to this day can only stand my family in moderation as well, partly due to the fact that I am nothing like them in terms of both interest and personality wise. Were not really close to this day, argue alot, and I find myself incapable of understanding how other families can be so tight knit, but after only seeing them only usually once a month now bc of college for two years now and having one of them visit the ER recently (thier fine now), I find myself concerned for their well being and missing them.

I dont really have a relationship with my father, I speak when he speaks...and will answer stuff but as far as going to and having a conversation I dont. Hes always worked like 70+ hours a week and yeah I still just cant make myself really find anything in common with him. Ive tried pretty much my whole life and I cant really form a relationship with him....so its a peaceful co-habitation more like room-mates in a large house that rarely see each other. My mom and my grandmother on her side and I get along great....my dads parents and I...are always at each others throats. They dont like how I look, act or dress...and I think theyre a bunch of backward ass hicks :D

I have made my own little family of sorts with my GF and our group of friends. We do all holidays and stuff at somebodys house for just us....I consider my group of friends my real family. We are all so diffrent but its so great because we all get along so well :)

well you mentioned a step mother.. i have one of those. im in my 30's now, but clearly remember highschool living with that dragon. My step mom was so controlling she timed me getting ready in the mornings (i had 15 mins to get dressed, do hair and makeup--it was agonizing as a teen) i couldnt go to parties or hang out with friends. my brother and i had to get a's and b's or we were grounded (no tv, phone or anything--you came home, ate dinner did your homework, chores and went to bed-and we were grounded forever.. there was one entire school year we were grounded)

my stepmom was a totalitarian dictator banshee so i feel your pain. her and my dad live about 30 mins away, and my husband and i see them a few times a year--she tries to act like my best friend now.

oh and speaking of screwed up families.. my dads sister is married to a mentally disturbed man who was a preacher (he delivers pizza now)--he got fired for showing up to sermon in his pajamas.

for a living i work on an acute, lock down psych ward. i could tell you guys some great stories..

oh and i do have a racist bigot for an uncle too! my stepmoms brother is a horrible pig.
