My parents had a small fish tank when I was a kid. I used to sit and watch the fish for hours and I had so much fun picking fish out to put in the tank that it just stuck. I could never have the monster fish I always wanted (arowana, clown knife, etc) until I got my own house because I never had room before that. Now I'm the crazy fish lady!

i suppose it not by chance that rallysman and you both live in indiana :grinno: :grinno:

when i first met my husband he was employed in a job he loved so much he said he would probably work whether he was paid or not.. {it is not important what his job was} the important part is when he said but.............. the thing i really would love is to have my own fish store.. he worked in numerous ones as a kid and then even showed his fish at the fairs.. but life was hectic yet good but he never did get to open a store... After i received my first horse as a birthday present{the one in my avator}{my dream come true} i decided it was time for him to at least get back into home aquariums.. so 6 horses and 23 aquariums later.. here i am on MFK.. haha.. his little helper.. ;)

gr8 stories everybody...

growing up a navy brat, my family was always stationed at a naval base and always on a tropical area. we have lived in places like guam, hawaii, san diego, taiwan, etc. where the warmth and weather always brought us to the beach hence being around the ocean fostered my love of fish. its actually amazing that im not more into salt water now that i think about it. bringing home animals from the beach became something i regularly did, everything from hermit crabs, lizards, starfish, crabs, to even octopus was brought home.

Nope! We actually grew up quite close to each other and didn't meet until college--200 miles away from where we grew up! He sat by me in algebra class because the seat beside me was the only one left and now he's stuck with me. ;)

Some interesting stories in this thread.

My friend got me into the hobby about 12 years ago. I had always been into reptiles, but never fish. He had a setup with SA Cichlids and when I saw those O's...I was sold.

I have since moved away a bit from Cichlids (all of my attention is focused on Dats at the moment), but I have always had respect for the oscar because it was what got me into the hobby.

Much like rallysman....My girlfriend got me started. She bought me a ten gallon setup with a gift card so I could get some tiger barbs. I had that ten gallon for about 1 year and went through way to many fish. Then I thought it would be cool to keep a bass so I bought a 55. Well I never actually got a bass I just ended up with african cichlids.....then I bought a 75....then a 95 and a 100......within this time I married that very girl that got me started and she wasn't okay with 4 tanks. Away went the 55 and 75.

Everytime she says something bad about the tanks I hold it over her head that this is all her fault. "You handed me the joint hun." thats what I tell her!!!!

Been almost 3 years in the hobby.......once I found MFK My monster desire starting kicking in.......Got those bass I wanted and now I have my first Aro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just need bigger tanks now.

I laugh at how I got started. My mom always had a fish tank as I grew up. We even had JD when I was like 5 and I remember feeding them shrimp.

Last May I think it was. My daughter wanted a Betta so I got a 1gl tank and betta for my daughter. Mr. Moo was his name.

She begged me for a couple of months to get a snail. She had a friend with 2 mystery snails in a 10gl. I finally after a few months of begging let her get a snail. Snails=Gross. I bought her a tiny pea sized snail and a goldfish for a 1gl tank. They stayed in the tank for about a month together (dont know how they lived now that I know more). I decided to go get them a 10gl tank.

I put the 10gl where Mr Moo was and moved him in my bedroom where the goldfish and snail had been.

Mr Moo died by morning. I came home from work and he was dead. We were crushed and I dont know what could of killed him. He was fine, I just moved his tank to a different room!

I got a 10gl tank as I said and threw the goldfish and snail in there. Long story short I got a crash course lesson on 1) cycle of a tank 2) finrot and the goldfish ended up passing away from massive finrot. I had even removed him from the tank and I was doing 50% PWC everyday!

The snail made it through it all though.

Every fish I tried to keep in the 10gl died but the snail. LOL I read and read and taught myself what I needed to know. Still am!

I went and got my 55gl, moved the snail over and built the family of fish I have now. I have had my 55gl since Oct 2006 and only have lost a few tetra. (1 pleco but it wasnt my fault he just decided death was better then living the second day in my tank)

I cant wait to get my 75gl and my 125gl! I cant get enough.

Snails are not gross anymore either. I adore them LOL
