Who here has a Fish tank in their bedroom?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lmao!!!

I need a tank in my room to sleep as its been that way for the last 15 yrs...but with 28 tanks in my house I can hear running water at all times in any room so no need for one in the bedroom anymore. I can hear my large cats jumping and running water in the basement through the floor lol....it's impossible to hear rain outside or a storm with all the running water, that's about all my gf complains about. I also lived in my basement for 2 years with all my tanks before meeting my gf... So there not all that bad, I now have a nice upstairs and cable haha....had to bring a couple tanks upstairs to watch when she talks to much...I call it compromise hah... as for the smell were used to it...if she stays around long enough shell get used to it too and stop nagging.

That's right, you tell her lol

+1 on the humidity, especially during the summer.

It's hard to pass on the sound of running water while trying to fall asleep. It is so soothing.

I have a 55, a 45 and then a 15 in my room and they don't stink at all. I do small weekly water changes in the two larger tanks and a small change every couple weeks in the 15. So I think as long as you take care of them there should never be a stink.

I have a baby bowfin grow out tank in my bedroom and there is no stink. I do daily water changes but they are very messy fish. No stink though...

Amazing, I had two female bowfin growing out in my 65 gallon in my bedroom, and the tank stunk to the high heaven! I had to move them to a 135 gallon growout tank in clubroom by 14".

Five 12+ " Florida gars in the tank don't smell bad, although I do massive 80% water changes weekly.
I have three other tanks in my bedroom:
A 5 Gallon planted Pygmy Gulf Coast Sunfish colony,
A 10 gallon growout that just had a 3" (male) bowfin moved into a bigger growout strictly from aggression toward a similar sized albino senegalus bichir and a golden shiner minnow (A dither fish did not work as such!), and
A 115 gallon tall with two Datnoids 9" - 10" range, 14" Ornate Bichir, 12" Weeksi Bichir, 12" Lap. Bichir, 1 12" Bleekari Tilapia, one 5" (Major killer) Jacobf. Peacock and one 4" (Seriously Bad Tail [as in tough as nails]) Demosoni. Zero smell from any of these tanks either.

Again I absolutely disagree with the thought that massive water changes are unsafe for fish. They love clean water, the only chance of them not loving a massive water change of clean fresh water (of the same PH & same general temperature and water hardness range) is if the water was utterly filthy to begin with, and if the shock of what clean water was like didn't kill the fish on the spot, it would still most likely be incredibly beneficial to them.

The likelyhood of the filthy water having the same PH and relative range of water hardness as the clean water is very slim. This is the problem that most fishkeepers find in doing massive water changes.

If you are already on a regiment of daily water changes, there is little chance of an extreme gag in your bedroom.

On a sidenote, I came into this thread expecting questions and responses to pet fish dealing with human nakedness and the such that comes with men and women in a marriage master bedroom!:headbang2

when my husband met me I had 2 20h's a 20long the 37, 40breeder.. and 5gallon... all in my bedroom.... now we just have the 5 in the bedroom w/ our betta... also prolly why we're on kiddo number 2... being a typical woman I did have the rule no TV's in the bedroom. The rest of the tanks are in the basement 'cept the 40B which is in the living room filled w/ your typical community fish for the most part. I keep the cool stuff hidden away, lol. That and the pool would bust threw our floor if I had it upstairs.. deciding weather I want to set-up a 10 or 20 in our daughters room soon as she loves the tank in the living room... she had the 37 when she was first born at our old place.. was nice.. white noise and extra humidity...

I had a 125g aquarium and when I fed (sw preds) there was a fishy odor.

I think that sometimes when the skimmer was really working etc it might have gave off a smell.

Its harder for some of us...there is a "healthy fish tank smell" that I absolutely love. Its subtle, (at least to me) but I like it.

Maybe others are more sensitive.

Tell her it will help u save $$ on ur cable bill. Once u have a tank in ur room there is no need to have a tv. I eliminated my tv because all i do is watch my fish in my 40gallon. Lol the bigger set ups are outside. Its so relaxing at the end of the day to lay down and stare at ur fish.
Cant get any better than that!

I have a 20 long with 5 1 inch baby armatus' in my bedroom. Just a grow out before they head to the big tank. They have at least 100 guppies in there and I'm running a 20 gallon capacity hang on filter and a 10 gallon canister filter, they both have purigen in it and I do 25% water changes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I've never had any smelling issues!
