It can be cheap as you want or expensive as you want... Hell I go really cheap I use a stick to throw a 6 foot stick with a carved up rib bone from yesterdays lunch on the tip.. you can make the equipment in about 20 minutes if you wanted to...

What little actual bowfishing I've done I just used a homemade osage sinew backed bow, Osier Dogwood arrows tipped with bone points and cord made from dogbane or jute twine.

on the other end you could spend about a thousand on specialty equipment...

I take it you're like me and prefer to out-door it ;)

I would spear catfish back home in brasil with spears made from branches and metal shards. I also used to be pretty good at shooting birds and cats with homemade slingshots. Unfortunately I know near nothing about bows. Plus all we have here in FL are oaks, pines, and palm trees

I'm a bit of a fan of paleolithic / neolithic techniques of food gathering, hunting and fishing.. it worked before why not now? Darn good things to learn also...Amazes me people actually go hungry in this country. Even staying within legal means there is so much food around it is not funny, you just have to know how to utilize it and obtain it.

I love bowfishing for huge carp in April, May and June in the Snake River bordering Eastern Oregon. Our 2 biggest this year were just over 39 pounds and around 38 inches long. The water refraction and the carp's incredible spookiness make them a very challenging sport. I reccomend not eating carp here because of the high level of mercury in them. It is important to use a proven safe bow reel for shooting . A string tangle caused the death of a carp hunter here a few years back when the arrow he shot was pulled back at him by a tangled string and it pierced his brain thru his eye socket. Hunting must always be done using caution and following every safety measure. My biggest carp was in 2007 and it weighed 41 pounds.

Nice fish! Pics??

Real men fear not mercury Jim, or butterflies for that matter. Remember that for future posts.

Around here grass carp are protected, And the division of wildllife will fine you if they catch you with one.

Is that because they're triploid grass carp?

around here most grasscarp are triploid and stocked regularly, but a few I guess are fertile and have been breeding

onion you can pretty much use any bow. i retired my hoyt from deer hunting now use that for bowfishing, it works awesome, you can get a complete bowfishing set up for under 100 bucks thats top of the line. thats the way id go, you can use a stick and chicken wire too but i wouldnt recommend it.

i want to start bowfishing. there is a small pond in my neighborhood that i have watch get worse and worse due to carp. This pond used to produce big bass and lots of them. now im lucky to catch 1 or 2 1lbs a day. all i see is schools of big 2ft carp swimming around. makes me mad. I wrote my sr. research paper on common carps affects on water systems so i know all about it. so yeah thats why i want to start bowfishing and because i think bows and arrows are sweet... :D
